Supremely satisfying in all the ways

Wallace's latest installment in the Duck & Cover series is quite possibly his best work yet. I really enjoyed Post-Apocalyptic Nomadic Warriors, and my hopes for the sequel were high.

Wallace did not disappoint.

The evolution of Jerry's character in this part of the saga is sophisticated and supremely satisfying. The plot is a lot of fun and is a solid mixture of humor and adventure, as we've come to expect from Wallace's work. The medieval motif is as ludicrous as it is brilliant. Parts of Knights reads like a post-apocalyptic Monty Python sketch, and Wallace showcases expert timing with the humorous background dialogue. I'm already salivating over the next installment. WRITE FASTER, BENJAMIN!

End of the world with the knights,is actually pretty cool. Messed up but cool, and poor Jerry just can't catch a break. Loved every second of this story and a bit upset the sequel isn't ready yet! It's a fun story that keeps you entertained like any good story should.

I was already afraid of bears and now I have to worry about super smart bears! But the city of Tolerance is the scariest.

I got a free copy of this book from Mr Wallace for an honest review. But it is the third in the series so I bought Post-Apocaliptic Nomadic Warriors and Knights of the Apocalypse and read those so it would all make sense. What a week. I loved all three books. I like funny and irreverent but it is all somewhat plausible. So I was very intertained. The beginning rant is spot on. As a species we are hell bent on our own destruction. Mr. Wallace just makes it funny. The Librarian makes the best of the situation and always helps people at his own expense. I think we would all like to think that's the way we would be. Most of us would be hiding in a cave chewing on twigs. Even after the apocalypse though Texas still has steaks. I knew I loved living in Texas for a reason. So Jerry and Chewy(the dog) are still chasing Mr. Christopher and trying to get Erica back. The survivors he runs into, Willie and Coy, are the kind of rednecks that seem to be everywhere. They survive because they don't overthink anything. But they are not the true scary ones. It's the inhabitants of the city of Tolerance that are scary. Tolerance will be strictly enforced. And to ensure freedom for all, freedom enforcement officers will enforce the rules. I did like some of the approved opinions. Puppy's and kittens are nice and monkeys are deemed offensive. Any mention of monkeys or any other primate is prohibited. I hate monkeys. also the world is better off without Nickleback. But break the rules and you be sentenced to "pay your fair share".
The librarian has to fight through Willie and Coy, a motorcycle cycle gang, a bunch of crazys from inviticus and the skinners. The skinners scare the crap out of me. You will discover that they are scaryer that most things in the apocalypse.
Jerry with the help of Chewy does his best to outwit Mr Christopher and get the girl back. But I think it is worth the read, highly entertaining. That's what we read for isn't it, to be entertained. I'm looking forward to more of The Duck & Cover Adventure series and there appears to be a wealth of material from Mr. Wallace for me to discover while I wait.

About the Author
Lucy Maud Montgomery was born in Clifton (now New London), Prince Edward Island, in 1874. Her first novel, "Anne of Green Gables" (1908), was followed by more than twenty others. Long after her death, in 1942, she remains one of Canada's most beloved writers.

Kate Chopin was born in St. Louis, Missouri, In 1851. She began writing shortly after herHusband's death and, from 1889 until her ownDeath, her stories and other miscellaneousWritings appeared in Vogue, Youth's companion, Atlantic Monthly, Century, Saturday EveningPost, and other publications. In addition to The Awakening, Mrs. Chopin published another novel, At Fault, and two collections of short stories and sketches, Bayou Folk and A Night at Acadie. The publication of The Awakening in 1899 occasioned shocked and angry response from reviewers all over the country. The book was taken off the shelves of the St. Louis mercantile library and its author was barred from the fine arts club. Kate Chopin died in 1904.

A light, enjoyable read for fans of love stories of the Victorian era

Missed Chances is a collection of five short stories that all feature themes of love and loss. The book was edited by M.R. Nelson and the authors include L.M. Montgomery, Kate Chopin, Rabindranath Tagore, Helen Hunt Jackson and Constance Fenimore Woolson. What is unique about this book is that although all of the writers lived in the 1800s, their stories are still relevant and have stood the test of time. They are heartwarming, melancholic, with just enough humor to keep it lighthearted (Aunt Philippa, I’m looking at you).

Speaking of Aunt Philippa, she is by far my favorite character in the book. She’s a man-hating woman and an absolute riot to read. Her simple explanation of “that’s the men for you” for every undesirable situation that arises with the opposite sex is funny to say the least. I don’t want to give too much away but there’s a cute twist at the end that I rather enjoyed. Bonus: the story takes place in PEI, which isn’t too far from my corner of the world.

The stand out story for me is The Victory by Rabindranath Tagore. As silly as it may sound, it reminds me of a rap battle gone wrong between two poets (read it – you’ll know what I mean) which obviously wasn’t how the author intended it when he wrote it back in the 19th century but for some reason that’s how I imagine the scene would go down if it happened in today’s day and age. Rap battle aside, Shekhar’s decision at the end reminds us that it’s important to never give up as we don’t know what the future holds. Sure, the ending is sad but then who doesn’t love a good love tragedy?

I’m really happy that the publishing company, Annorlunda Books, approached me to review this book. I wasn’t familiar with any other the authors and I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to discover their work. Some stories I liked better than others, but overall it was a pleasant read. The book may not cater to everyone depending on taste however if you’re a fan of romantic tales from the Victorian era, pick up Missed Chances – you’re sure to enjoy it.

An enjoyable compilation of short stories

This is the first of Annorlunda Books' Taster Flights and consists of 5 stories in the public domain, edited by M.R. Nelson.
It's a very nice compilation of short stories with the common theme of what might have been and, as promised in the introduction, the stories play up one another nicely. The darker, heavier fare is sandwiched between the sunnier, lighter pieces.

"Aunt Philippa and the Men" by L.M. Montgomery opens the collection, and is a quick, engaging, funny read. It was written in first person from the standpoint of a young woman who seems real and relatable. You will love both her and her Aunt Philippa.
"The Kiss" by Kate Chopin is short, cynical, and delightful.
"The Victory" by Rabindranath Tagore employs stylistic elements that I probably did not appreciate as much as others might and I felt it was perhaps a misfit for this collection.
"The Mystery of Wilhelm Ruetter" by Helen Hunt Jackson was the most difficult one to read. The writing would be considered quite cumbersome by modern standards and the phonetic transcription of the characters' broken English with a thick German accent did not help.
"The Florentine Experiment" by Constance Fenimore Woolson was quite enjoyable to read. It will be a treat for the fans of Jane Austen.

Apart from Tagore's story, this collection also offers a nice window into the portrayal of women by North American female writers in the 1800's, some of whom were willing and able to write about real female characters, with agency and a range of thoughts and feelings. Those characters stand strong and appealing today.

This book was a beautiful combination of a number of popular loves stories. I needn't tell you whether or not this book was good...because all of the stories in the book are quite popular (for a reason). I found that the stories complemented each other very well. I'm not really into 18th century love stories, so I can't say that I would for-sure read this book again....but if you're into stories like that, or are wishing to test the waters, pick up Missed Chances.
