A great, comprehensive book.

No book can teach you how to draw, they can only show the direction. This book does it incredible well.

Examples are just enough concise. Usually its a 2 or 3 stages of picture from sketch to detailed result. Examples look good, making you want to draw like author.
Book covers drawing using pencil and has a few chapters about pen and ink drawing.

Highly recommend it for anyone who want to obtain a skill of drawing.

Great book! Great price!

I bought this book for my grand daughter, who is a budding artist. Since she was around six years old, she's showed a bent for drawing and sketching. In the past few years I've given her different books o sketching: how to sketch apples or oranges,how to sketch trees, how to sketch fairly simple objects.

Now she seems to be able to move on to more complicated subjects. This book seems to fill that need very well. She was thrilled to get this book, and hasn't put it down since she received it.

Doesn't spend enough time on the fundamentals

This book seems to be less of an instructional how-to guide to drawing and more of an introduction to the various concepts and techniques used in drawing without explaining how to practice or achieve them. For example, the book doesn't seem to go into any detail on shading beyond a few paragraphs and pictures explaining the very basic techniques and then jumps to what I assume are supposed to be practice drawings that go from basic outline to beautifully rendered drawing in three steps. A more apt title would be "The Advanced Fundamentals of Drawing"

A Lot Goes On.. All Fun and Games

The Scott Cullen series by Ed James is clearly in the top tier of its genre, the modern British cop procedural. I had eagerly awaited the latest, "Cowboys and Indians" and was not disappointed.
James incorporated his working knowledge of the corporate IT business, together with a white collar BDSM scenario and ended up with a lively search for miscreants involved in corporate malfeasance, murder and rape. The resultant effort is a "can't put down" page turner.
One strong facet of James' works, which was very apparent in his latest, is the strength and power of the dialogues. His characters are all realistic and the well presented dialogues are a key reason. By the way, as a James reader will instantly recognize, is tongue in cheek.

An American readers has to look sharp to read this fast-paced whodunit because of all the Scottish police slang. But the effort is worth it. The pace is headlong, the characters engaging, and the high-tech portrayal of Edinborough really pleasing.

I've read all his books and am eager to read more. A big, big talent.

Excellent!

Cowboys and Indians is book 7 of the excellent Detective Scott Cullen series. I've been looking forward to diving into this book; I've been a fan of the series since the beginning. I wouldn't say you need to read the other book in the series first; there are references to past events, but not so many that a new reader would be lost. But as it's such an enjoyable series, I very much recommend reading the other books.

Cullen is easing into his new rank as Detective Sergeant, and managing a small group of detectives on the latest case of a man found dead under a bridge wearing only his underpants. They plunge into the sordid, corrupt field of banking, where everyone lies and power corrupts. Meanwhile, Cullen's girlfriend, DI Sharon McNeil is trying to solve a series of rapes on men after they visited a local gay bar, The Liquid Lounge.

There was lots to like in this book; strong characters and a riveting plot sucks you in from the start and the solid pace kept the plot moving without getting bogged down. I was afraid at first that Bain would not make an appearance; who doesn't love a character you love to hate? His antagonism provides not only a little comedy relief but also adds to the tension one needs while reading a thriller. Similarly, the relationship between Cullen and Sharon, and their sorrow is something that nearly everyone can relate to and gives one a more personal connection to the story.

Overall, a fantastic book by one of my favorite authors. Many thanks to Ed James for the advanced copy of what is easily the best book I've read so far this year.

Multifaceted

To some, Shakespeare's greatest tragedy, to others a closet drama and even a problem play, Antony and Cleopatra seems to possess, like its heroine, 'infinite variety'.

Despite its obvious ability to enthral and perplex, the play has had a relatively impoverished stage history. Reasons for its lack of success are, again, varied: it is 'unactable'; its most successful post-war Cleopatras (Peggy Ashcroft and Judy Dench) have been 'too English' to suggest exotic allure, etc. Michael Neill's edition does a thorough job charting the play's troubled stage life, even if his performance section is overlong and not well integrated into his discussion. I, for one, found the composite review notices (often synthesising two or three individual reactions into a single response) almost suffocating in their detail. Those readers particularly interested in past productions and their reception, however, will be spared much trawling through press cuttings.

This edition's real strength lies is its formidable and wide-ranging Introduction, often drawing upon radical recent criticism (by the likes of Janet Adelman and Jonathan Dollimore). Some of the more rewarding ideas include the play's relationship to mythic archetypes (Omphale and Hercules, Mars and Venus); Antony's wrestling with (male) identity; Roman constructions of 'otherness'; and the play's parallels with other Shakespearean tragedies - especially with its 'successor and companion piece, Coriolanus'.

This is yet another Oxford Shakespeare with a baffling bibliography, however. Despite making fullest use of a book by the above-mentioned author Janet Adelman, she is not listed here. (Unlike Styan Thirby, whose unpublished annotations of C18 editions earn him four entries.) Puzzling.

At times dense and challenging, the author's fondness for Scottish dialect words can obfuscate further (the term 'eldritch humour' appears three times). Nonetheless, Neill's Antony is indispensable to any serious student of the play.

The 'h' edition

Michael Neill's Oxford edition risks being remembered for a single distinctive feature: the insertion of an 'h' into Antony's name. His arguments for this on pp. 134-35 are not convincing. Neill claims that 'Anthony', the Folio spelling, "corresponds to the most common modern form of the name". Even if this is the case, which I doubt, I cannot see that it constitutes reason enough for such a wilful deviation from custom. As far as Folio spelling is concerned, adherence to its practice elsewhere would give us a play called Twelfe Night, and a title-hero called Troylus. E. G. Withycombe's "Oxford Dictionary of Christian Names" (1977) helps to account for the 1623 compositors' practice: "The intrusive h in the spelling Anthony was a late development, and seems not to appear before the late 16th C. It may have been the result of false etymology, for Camden (1605) derives the name from Greek".There might have been a supporting clue here, had Neill chosen to pursue it, for at 3.13.39 Antony is associated with a "blown rose", in contrast, perhaps, to the "blossoming Caesar" of 4.13.23. Could Shakespeare's "lesse Greeke" have extended to an awareness of Camden's false linkage of the name with a flower? Possibly, or possibly not. But Miss Withycombe sensibly continues: 'The h is of course silent, but there is some danger of spelling pronunciation (already in use in U.S.A.), and the older spelling is to be preferred.' There is a real danger that Neill's insertion of the 'h' will prompt first-time student readers to sound that unnecessary letter. For those already familiar with the play its presence is a perpetual irritant.

The extra letter in the hero's name presages an expansiveness that is, overall, this edition's besetting weakness. The Introduction is packed with interesting ideas, exploring such devices as hyperbole, paradox, and anti-climax in terms that are often witty and just. For instance, at the end, Shakespeare draws "a superb theatrical climax out of seeming anticlimax, in much the way that Cleopatra herself transforms the most abject defeat into the paradoxical victory that renders the triumphant Caesar 'ass unpolicied"' (p. 99). Good use is made of passages from Montaigne on the discontinuity of human identity. But what kind of reader really needs a 130-page critical introduction, especially when the commentary replicates many of the same points? Even serious scholars will find Neill's intro tiresome eventually.

Finally A Central Reference for the DSM Work!

This is a beautifully compiled book collecting research on the Design Structure Matrix method over the past 20 years. The book has very clear organization. Within each topic, a variety of examples are collected, and concisely presented. Full references are provided for those interested in going deeper. The high quality color prints makes a strong visual impact and is just a pleasure to see, speaking as someone who is a part of this research community! Finally, there is a place I can point to for those who ask to read more about the method. Thank you!

The book describes a variety of application examples of the use of DSM in different process and product domains and in dealing with different problems in various industries. The book uses colour to make the connections clear. Typical examples include:

• Using DSM to represent and analyse the architecture of complex systems.
• Applying DSM to represent and analyse organizations that develop engineered systems and the types of insights gained through these DSM applications.
• Applying DSM to represent and analyse product development processes for engineered systems and the types of insights gained through these DSM applications.
• Using DSM in matrix models that represent two or more domains at once.

The large number different colourful charts in the book illustrate the different types of information that can be shown in the connection between the system elements.

Is this book useful? Well, it depends. It does deserve a place in an organizations’ library to provide junior systems engineers with ideas about how DSM and N2 charts can be used in various situations. However, it does not appear to be a book that would be referenced very often and so does not need to be on your bookshelf.

Boger, a successful organic chemist with Merck, left his position as a senior director to establish Vertex. He recruited an exceptional group of researchers with the aim of integrating the most advanced disciplines in molecular biology to develop an immune-suppressing drug used in organ transplants and a potent HIV protease inhibitor to help thwart AIDS. Werth also discusses Vertex's financing and initial public stock offering. difficult, fascinating, and compelling birth of a company

This is the story of the first few years of Vertex, a bioventure that sought to create drugs that were constructed molecule by molecule - it is supposed to be "rational drug design". In exchange for allowing the company to check his work for accuracy and proprietary disclosures, Werth was admitted into the inner circle of the company, with both executives and scientists, for four years.

Werth offers masterful descriptions of both the science and the intricacies of the busisess deals. The work is similar to that of Tracy Kidder in "The Soul of a New Machine" and, in my opinion, of the same quality.

At the center of the story is Vertex's founding visionary, Joshua Boger, formerly a researcher at Merck. He reasoned that instead of screening soil samples and insect secretions in a hot or miss approach in thousands of petri dishes, he could design drugs atom by atom to bind to - and thus inactivate - molecules instrumental to the disease process. In theory, these drugs would be without side effects: because of the precision of the design, they would adhere to their target alone, allowing beneficial enzymes of other chem reactions to go on unimpeded.

Boger's first target molecule was FKBP, which he believed was a crucial agent of the immune system. By blocking it, he hoped to prevent the host's body from rejecting transplanted organs. While Boger was out raising money (eventually reaching $60 million), Vertex's researchers hunkered down to isolate and analyze FKBP, whose molecular mechanic remained poorly understood.

Unfortunately, what happened is a great example of the difficulties in marrying business to cutting-edge science: after over two years of pushing themselves to the brink of nervous collapse, Vertex scientists found difficulties with FKBP. Even worse, Boger's arch rival, a prof at Harvard, discovered why. The prof beat VErtex, Werth argues, because he remained outside the venture capital game and could thus concentrate totally on the science and could openly collaborate with them rather than hide proprietary results.

Nonetheless, driven and confident as ever, Boger turned his scientific team onto the new problem. Thru all of this, Boger comes off as a fascinating character: the son of a suicide, he is unshakably convinced that he can bend nature as well as the business world to his will. The reader sees what lies behind the herculean efforts of him and his team.

Warmly recommended as a rivetting tale of human endeavor that embraces the true complexity.

Fast-paced and Insightful

I first read this book nearly two years ago as research for a novel I was writing. Recently, I turned to it once more to pick up a few terms and found myself reading chapter after chapter!
This non-fiction tale has enough twists and turns and drama to match any thriller on the market. An informative and engaging tale of a pharmaceutical start-up and the people involved. Joshua is interesting enough that the book could have been solely about him, but he isn't the only one. All of the players in this ego-driven mega-drama are interesting on many levels.
Who would I reccomend this book to? Anyone who likes a well-told story. A background in medicine is not needed, and neither is a knowledge of business practices. All you need to enjoy this book is a brain . . . and a night light because you'll be reading this book deep into the night.

A thouroughly enjoyable read, Werth sheds light on the personaliteis and complexities of an amazing and multifaceted business. Throughout, the author uncovers the unseen deal-making, hand-wringing, and fist clenching that dominate the start of Vertex, a strucure-based paharmaceutical firm.
I particularly enjoyed the background on the Boger-Schreiber collaboration and rivalry, and the ensuing rivalry in Vertex's own labs. Further, following the last few years of Vertex's ups and downs via the Internet has been thoroughly enjoyable.
Werth's style is easliy read, and his obvious unhindered access to Vertex and its people make the story enjoyable, suspenseful, and dramatic.
