Great for an intro to poli-sci

Roskin explains the political system in very simple, brief, and direct terms. Short chapters, easy concepts to understand and grasp, and an overall good examination into the political systems of the U.S. and other nations. It is a good book for introduction/lower division political science classes.

A Loquacious and Convoluted Introduction

This book's author comes off through its pages as a newly-graduated socialist who loves the ideology but doesn't want to be branded with its title so he calls himself an independent and attacks anyone who disagrees with his "universal truth."

I like studying political science, but I never act as though whatever I believe is without flaws, much like the author of this book does. Then again, it's difficult to understand what the author's point was in writing the book, as most of it plays out as a disjointed and frustrating text by someone who is struggling with repressed ideological alignments.

When the book starts it discusses the percolating up and down models, where either society is a reflection of the state or vice versa. While our good author mentions this, he never really explains what position the book takes, so when I did an online quiz for the chapter it puzzled me considerably. Then it drowns on about different social theories in a very eloquent style that looks good until you realize it doesn't help for study and fails to convey anything meaningful that the author is thinking. One might argue that this was used to eliminate bias, but it undermines firm study points and makes the author look like a man for all seasons without saying anything worthwhile about his beliefs.

At the end, the text comes off as a convoluted mesh of partisanship and pseudo science that made me waste time when completing assignments in a class that could have been more enjoyable. I would have much preferred an unabashed socialist(or whichever ideology the author is) text that makes me think based upon that opinion, thus allowing for compelling arguments and workable exam study.

Not recommended to students at all. Even if you love the author's viewpoints (which are impossible to find in the text), you will discover that it is a painfully long and boring ride for an introductory book.

review of Political Science

This paperback book is lightweight and condensed with lots of easy to read study information. Each chapter is clear, thorough and well formatted with key reference terms identified and referenced. I thought this book might be boring but on the contrary, it has been very interesting with lots of history noted within the study of politics. Although I didn't have a choice in my book purchase as this was for a class, I feel this book could be read, understood and enjoyed by individuals reading for pleasure and knowledge.

About the Author

Stephen Judge was formerly a Senior Lecturer at London Guildhall University (now London Metropolitan University) where he taught in the areas of company and commercial law, including corporate insolvency and comparative company law (France/England). He holds a law degree from Bristol University and a Dipl�me d'�tudes Approfondies (DEA) in European Community Law from the Universit� Jean Moulin Lyon III. He was a professeur associ� at the Universit� Jean Moulin (1978-79) and was a professeur invit� at the Universit� Ren� Descartes Paris 5 from 1994 until 2001. He is the author of Law for Business Students (Palgrave Macmillan (2006). He is currently an associate lecturer at the University of Surrey.

Good reference but forgot about Independent Producers.

Great knowledge popper! This book covers practically everything a game producer needs. Pretty layout. I read it straight through. No regrets.

I am an Executive Producer on a small Indie team and only have two complaints;

1. I wish the book catered somewhat to Indie Developers rather than assuming the reader works on a team of 200 with a Mr. Publisher pouring down their necks. That's not me at all. I expected it to be more diverse than that.

2. Lot's of errors. There is a section in the book, "Technical Production" if I remember correct, where the frequency of errors really start to pick up, as if the writer used Apple Voice Recognition instead of an actual editor. That was frustrating to me as it slowed down my reading flow. I don't want to edit the book while I read unless I am being paid. I do believe this section had a different author but ahm... read before you publish. :P

Overall, I recommend this book as it is a great reference and I will keep with me forever or until the next edition. However, I will be looking for a similar book but more suited to my personal needs as an Indie Developer. "Indie Game Development Survival Guide" might be my next try. But don't hesitate to buy this.

Fairly useful

This book is a pretty rigid look at game production. It's probably fairly applicable to large corporate game development. I'd view it as useful to a suit coming from another industry to games and needing to know all the paperwork and processes to stick to "to do it by the book".

Generally not applicable to small time, lean, or indie projects I feel. Of course, there is always stuff you can glean from the content regardless of its intended audience.

Great guide to the game dev pipeline

This book was required for a graduate class. As with any text book, some texts just have basic information for you to follow along with the instructor. However, this title is a great read for anyone looking to get into the production side of game development. Each chapter contains valuable information along with interviews from people who have worked in the industry. This book covers a project management styles, business and legal information, technical requirements for games, game ratings, and even outsourcing and localization. There is also a DVD that accompanies the book which has examples of budgeting and scheduling. I highly recommend this book for those who lack an understanding of how game production functions.

An Immersion In Joy!

A truly joyful companion to the "Little Book of Big Potentials" by Melissa Joy Jonsson! With beautifully descriptive imagery, Melissa skillfully invites us to join her in experiencing these 24 Fields in very real and tangible ways. I have loved the Fields since first reading the "Little Book of Big Potentials" and attending Melissa's 'M-Joy Of Being' seminars, and I have seen profound changes in my life (and in other's lives) through them. I highly recommend immersing yourself in the vibrancy of this practical play book that is easy to read and even easier to use.

This a great companion to Melissa's Little Book of Big Potentials. This handbook is full of practical tips and techniques. Every page has lots of information. I highly recommend both the Little Book and this companion. It is fun to play with Melissa's 24 frequencies (if I can call them as such). Besides fun, they can bring many positive changes to one's life.

From "Six" to "Eight"

"Eight American Poets," edited by Joel Conarroe, is a fine anthology. The introduction notes that this book was "designed as a companion volume to 'Six American Poets,'" also edited by Conarroe. "Eight" follows the same plan as "Six": rather than anthologize a huge company of poets who are represented by only a few pieces each, each of Conarroe's books focuses on a relatively small group of poets, each of whom is represented by a substantial selection. Conarroe's approach allows the reader to get a fuller feel of each poet in the anthology format.
The poets of "Eight" are Theodore Roethke, Elizabeth Bishop, Robert Lowell, John Berryman, Anne Sexton, Sylvia Plath, Allen Ginsburg, and James Merrill. Each poet's work is prefaced by a substantial individual introduction.
There are many masterpieces in this book. Curiously, I found the most compelling poems to be those that focus on nature: Roethke's "The Meadow Mouse," Bishop's "The Fish," Plath's "Mushrooms," and Merrill's "The Octopus." Poems like these combine skillfully used language with keen insight, and reveal these poets to be true heirs of Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson (two of the featured artists in "Six American Poets").
Overall, I felt that "Eight" was not as strong as its sister volume, "Six." Although there are many poetic masterpieces in "Eight," there is also much material which, in my opinion, hasn't aged well. The so-called "confessional poetry" of some of these writers strikes me as overwrought. Some of the longer poems failed to resonate with me. I was particularly disappointed by Berryman's "Homage to Mistress Bradstreet," especially since I am an admirer of Anne Bradtreet's own work. Admittedly, this criticism may merely reflect my own personal tastes, but I submit it for the reader's consideration.
The fact that so many of these poets either wrote about each other, or pop up in the editor's introductions to each others' work, sometimes gives the book as a whole a creepy, incestuous feel. And the fact that so many of these poets committed suicide, had long-term mental health problems, and/or suffered from addictions further gives the book as a whole a rather morbid feel. On second thought, maybe this group of eight is a bit problematic!
Still, editor Conarroe has assembled an impressive anthology that I would recommend for students and teachers, as well as to a general readership. Although a mixed bag, "Eight American Poets" contains some truly enduring work by an octet whose legacy is secure.

An excellent introduction to 8 major poets

For someone just coming into an appreciation of poetry-somewhat suspiciously like myself-Conarroe's anthology approach is perfect: concentrate on just a few major poets and provide an introduction to each and a generous sampling of their poetry.

I have owned this book for several years now and it introduced me to what are now some of my favorite poets (Elizabeth Bishop, Theodore Roethke, Anne Sexton, Robert Lowell). It is a book that I go back to time and time again, and I encourage anyone to include it in their collection.
