Almost didn't buy this edition, because I had an earlier one, but I am thrilled that I did!

I am really NOT in a position to spend this much money on a book. Especially one that I had the prior edition of! But it's now or never to do something I always wanted to do, see the National Parks. And as an aging geologist, who spent most of my life looking at subsurface data, and being distracted by the usual things like kids, I really don't want to miss out on understanding the geology of the area I am looking at. I really doubted that this edition would be much different than the previous one, but it is really orders of magnitudes nicer in terms of the layout. I didn't want to invest the time learning the geology, only to learn that I was studying outdated material. Now, the sections are color-coded, to make it easier to see the classification that has been used. (Weathering and erosion, Caves and Reefs, Volcanism, etc). All of the stratigraphic columns have been colored, which makes it visually much easier to see and understand them. Cross sections, maps, and headings are also colored. The photos are in color, and now integrated into the text.

To me, the text is very readable. I have a huge geological dictionary, but really appreciate the fact that there is a glossary of terms for those things I don't quite remember. In fact, the text is great for teaching about different geologic environments. For example, reef development. Naturally my new PC has no CD drive, so I have yet to see the photos included. I do wish a more durable, removable case for the CD was included, because it will surely get damaged if left in the book. I have an entire wall of geology and geophysics books. But this has become hands down my favorite one!

Not what it claims--how to REALLY do it

As a person who loves the dating/relationship genre, let me assure you that there are MUCH better books out there. This book repackages the techniques usually recommended to salesmen--mirroring the other person in order to build rapport, and "speaking in their language." And that's exactly what you'll be doing--selling a falsified version of yourself in a marginally effective and pretty awkward way. (In spite of her exuberantly triumphant intro, Tracy Cabot is now divorced. I imagine it was hard to sustain this manufactured "bond" for very long.)

If you really want to learn about love languages, "The Five Love Languages" by Gary Chapman is much better. It will teach you how to truly interpret and sincerely relate to expressions of love between you and your boyfriend/girlfriend/partner. And if you want to make a man fall in love with you, "Why Men Love Bitches" by Sherry Argov is hands-down the best. It takes the also-fabulous prinicples behind "The Rules" (which have worked for me beautifully) and makes them practicable for the modern and/or professional woman. (I highly recommend The Rules--loosely interpreted--as well). You can read any of these books in 2-3 hours. I have read the latter two more times than I can count.

If after reading Why Men Love Bitches and The Rules, you haven't solved your dating problems, you probably need to read "He's Just Not That Into You"--which is not about dating as much as it is about recognizing the excuses women make for men when the truth isn't what we want. (Gems include "No, he's not too busy to call you. Calling you takes less time than going to the bathroom. If he's into you, calling you is the bright moment in his otherwise busy day.") This should definitely help build the correct mentality for expecting--and getting--both interest and great treatment from men.

And, finally, "What Southern Women Know About Flirting" has some tips and ideas that will help anyone, but particularly those inclined to play the "Damsel in Distress" card. This one's just the icing on the cake.

Very Interesting, But Does It Work For Most Women?

As a former trainer in NLP for 7 years I've always been impressed with how effective these techniques are for creating internal change (habits, behaviors, disciplines, overcoming fears, sales, etc.)
But the ability to create change in other people (like getting a man to fall in love with you) is something that I believe from my experience in the field almost no one can achieve on their own with NLP.
I wrote my fishy relationship/self-help book because I saw how different the real works as opposed to the NLP-seminar-John Gray-Tony Robbins models. That experience came from dating in Southern California and going on a lot of cruises and Club Med vacations.
What I found is that people who try to use NLP techniques come across as being weird. It also has a strange way of messing with the natural karma of love. For whatever reason, when you try to get someone else to fall in love with you through an organized skill set like this, it has a way of ruining the magic for yourself.
What is important to know from Tracy's book are the general concepts of sensory acuity and anchoring. Sensory acuity comes in handy when you recognize when you get an instant negative reaction (like bad breath, body odor, unappealing voice, talk too fast, talk too loud, talk too slow, talk too much). These things cause a person to be out of rapport. Which means an unconscious bad first impression.
Anchoring has to do with creating stirring memories or special moments. This book is about the mechanics of creating those moments which is all right, but the average person needs to feel it come naturally from within.
If a woman really wants to know how to get a man to fall in love, she must first maximize her own feminine allure (Being a Woman by Dr. Toni Grant) and then make her contacts and develop relationships. Dr. Cabot's work will help you with identifying technical mistakes, but not some much about having more to give (variety, intensity, heart), cleansing the spirit, and understanding and appreciating a love partner.
As an author, NLP trainer, and semi-relationship expert, I think that this book addresses the 20% of mechanics when it's done right (a very difficult task without years of training and integration...not just in a simple reading of a book!) But what most people really need is the 80% of how loving relationships work from within on the emotional-spiritual world.
My advice here is to enjoy this book and become more aware of instant triggers, but don't get carried away and become a weirdo!
Weirdness spooks men away quickly!
Remember that love is far more spiritual than mechanical.

Dangerous in the Hands of Amateurs

Between this book and David Gibbons' "Love Signals" you have a very powerful arsenault. After years of dating, I read these two books and began to use the suggestions at work and play. I did better at work and I managed to find a great guy who I have now been married to for over 18 years. The book suggests that you try to determine what "language" the prospective "husband" uses in his life to communicate. Is he audial? Responds to sounds. Visual? Tends to learn by viewing, or is able to think spatially like an architect or engineer? Or is he a touchy, feely guy who learns through feelings and touching or manipulating things like a mechanic. Once you identify this, the book teaches you how to communicate in his language style. In addition, it teaches you how to act in a relationship similar to "The Rules" only this book predated "The Rules" and has more concrete information. Enjoy it, but don't use the techniques lightly, they can be highly manipulative.

Great and very informative.

The author presents an interesting method of scoring and interpeting the TAT. I learned a lot of from it and highly recommend it to anyone trying to use this method both in the clinical practice as well as for other purposes.

The scoring method proposed by Murray (in the TAT set) does not appeal to me in particular. I love the book, as it is not only well documented and researched but also very interesting to read. A must for all TAT (and other projective methods) enthusiasts.

Uneven, especially for a third edition

I am currently using this textbook for my introductory course in American politics. It is the second time I am using this text, and I will likely use it at least once more. So while I say that this book is uneven, it is still better than most other introductory texts out there.

The most attractive features of this text are its size and price. In a typical semester you can read this text along with two other short texts and still keep your students' book bill under $80. I'm using the book with the Dover edition of Lincoln's Great Speeches and the Essential Federalist and Anti-Federalist Papers, and it all comes in around $70.

Several of the chapters are, moreover, either good or at least competent. The chapters on American political culture, parties and interest groups, and elections are quite good, and those on civil liberties and civil rights are at least satisfactory. In all these cases there are accurate discussions of basic concepts and facts, illustrated with appropriate and interesting examples. The chapter on parties and interests groups, for example, manages to pack a short history of American parties, the Framers' view of parties, pros and cons of strong parties, and a basic explanation of interest groups and interest group theory into a 29-page chapter. Throughout, the chapter is quite accessible for 100-level political science students. The chapter on American political culture, likely under the knowledgeable direction of Fiorina, is also good.

There are poor chapters as well, however. In the introductory chapter "Democracy in the United States" the authors make a half-hearted attempt to suggest that there is something new, exciting, and positive about America's democracy. At times they seem to argue that ours is an age of American democratic revival--a thesis that quickly collapses due to lack of evidence ("plentiful elections" may have once been a populist demand, but do not mean better--or even more--democracy). The authors end the chapter with a promise to combat prevailing cynicism in the following chapters (a worthy goal), but they are forced to admit that many of the alleged ailments of the 'new democracy' may indeed be real.

In other chapters, errors sometimes pop up. They range from the relatively insignificant ('almost all of Reagan's vetoes were pocket vetoes'--wrong: exactly half were); to the common but inexcusable (confusing checks and balances with separation of powers); to the egregious (e.g. the Supreme Court "rarely invokes" the Tenth Amendment in federalism cases). Overall the rate of errors is somewhere between an average Wikipedia article and a good reference book on American politics. At any rate, the text is not a reliable enough source for facts. Aren't these the kinds of errors that are supposed to be gone by the first, to say nothing of the third edition?

This last error is a part of a separate problem in the book--the authors occasionally but suddenly reveal various axes that they proceed to grind for paragraphs at a time. The federalism chapter is a prime example. The chapter is not without some good basic instruction on the key federalism issues, and an explanation of the constitutional sources of federal authority (though they omit a good discussion of the constitutional basis of state government authority). However, before the text actually finishes explaining how the federal system works, it paints an ominous and hyperbolic picture of a federal government run wild. To be sure, some intelligent people have argued against, e.g. post-New Deal Commerce Clause jurisprudence and other expansions of federal authority. But this admittedly legitimate point of view is simply imposed on a 100-level student before he or she knows much of anything about federalism at all. The rhetorical means of this imposition, moreover, seems to be beneath the authors. For example, in a caption to a photo related to the Wickard v. Filburn case, the authors ask suggestively: "Do you think the framers envisioned a national government with such power?" (despite what Fiorina et al suggest with this question, my view is that in the case of Madison or even Marshall, the answer is yes, quite possibly). The case that the federal government is dangerously imposing, even against the will of the American people, is driven home by the marginally useful statistic that Americans say they trust their local governments more than the federal government. Nowhere is it mentioned that most of the purportedly breathtaking expansions of federal power in the post-New Deal era, including minimum wage and workweek regulations, child labor laws, environmental regulations, and food and health safety regulations, not to mention Social Security, are massively popular with the American people. If the federal system is seriously out of balance in favor of the national government, then the American people are largely okay with it. A more balanced chapter would have mentioned something like this.

When discussing the "retreat from centralization" in federalism, the authors only mention a few episodes from the 1990s, completely ignoring the New Federalism of Nixon and Reagan and of the Berger and early Rehnquist courts. They do mention New York v U.S. (1992), but that stands in direct contradiction to their bizarre claim earlier in the chapter that the 10th Amendment is a dead letter.

The Constitution chapter has similar problems. Part of what could be a good background on the writing of the Constitution is there, but it is incomplete. Moreover, the authors go to considerable lengths to point out how "unsavory" the Constitutional convention was (mainly because none of the members of the convention were poor, because their discussions were secret, and because they went beyond merely amending the Articles of Confederation), but then inexplicably shift direction and conclude that the final product was good anyway. Very little is said about what is actually in the Constitution, why many 'yeoman farmers' were against it, and why the mostly wealthy authors of the Constitution (along with legislative majorities in every state) were for it. If the authors' attempt in the book is to combat cynicism with understanding, then the Constitution chapter falls somewhat short.

With other texts, and in the hands of a knowledgeable instructor, the flaws of this book are not too great to overcome. But I hope that future editions of this text will be free of some of the problems that still appear in this third attempt.

I just had musical theatre with Dr. McLamore and used her book as a textbook for the class. I joked with all my friends that this is the type of book I would by in stores for "fun" reading.

It really is a great look at the history of musical theatre going back to the early Operas. It's nice to see a book back up that far and show where the roots of musical theatre are found. I have never found that in another book on musical theatre so this ones definetely a wonderful book to have.

The book explores many musicals in detail complete with a plot synopsis of many of them and a deeper examination of some of the songs within them.

It is really an amazing book. Any musical theatre fan would benefit from reading it:)

This book can be realy expensive, but this seller offered me a used book for a great price. The book is in good condition considering it's used. We are reading the book in a Musical Theatre History course, and it's a wonderful supplement. It covers everything that led to musicals being formed from the earliest operas through the 20th century. It's great!

I don't like including spoilers in my reviews so I don't have ...

Clear your schedule when starting to read The Baby, cause the only way to read this book is in one sitting. I don't like including spoilers in my reviews so I don't have much to say beyond the fact that I loved this book and I'm so bummed that I won't see these characters for another year at least.

The Baby continues to delve into, tear down and build up Sophie and Neil's relationship. What I love so much about Abigail Barnette's books is that when I read them I feel respected as a reader. Yes, these books might be shelved under the erotic romance shelf, but they're much more than that. The Baby especially. The sex, the Sir/submissive relationship and Sophie's recent exploration of her sexuality are still a huge part of this story. There's a lot going on but I like that Barnette didn't let the sex fall to the wayside and is able to bring it in to the plot. She makes sex important and sometimes our society can forget that sex is very integral for some people.

That being said, the sex scenes themselves aren't as.... frequent? What was included was very important for the development of the plot and the characters but this story wasn't about what new kink Barnette could expose us to. While The Boss might have been porn with plot this novel is more a plot that has a few sex scenes sprinkled in between real life. You know, like real life. Don't come in to this book expecting a light and fluffy read, it's not. It is a true read though because Barnette respects her readers.

I can't wait to see what Barnette comes up with next! I need more well written and smart romance novels!

Too be honest this book doesn't even seem like it belonged apart of the series, at all. Yeah life happens and that's reality but it just didn't seem to fit. I feel like the abortion and baby being brought back up was out of desperation because both Neil and Sophie made it clear more than once, no more babies. Even the opening sex scene between the three of them was, off. Something was just off, seemed rushed and short. I don't know. Would rather have continued to wait on the book until she came up with something worth putting out. Kind of ruined the whole series for me.

*Spoiler-free review* I adore The Boss series and I've grown so attached to it's characters. Yes, the books have hot sex, but that isn't what keeps me coming back. It's the humor, the depth of the characters and the palpable emotion.

I read this in less than 24 hours...couldn't put it down. Fair warning, there is a lot to process emotionally. I cried...I felt like I was reading about actual friends instead of fictional characters.

But there was so much growth and development throughout this book. Sophie has grown so much throughout the series and it's been such a joy to read.

I could go on. But in response to the reviewer who said this book "ruined the series," come on. Tragedies happen every day...it's part of life. It can't all be hot sex and happy days.

Also, it was great to see glimpses of Ian and Penny, as well as giving us more time with Emir and Gena.

About the Author

Professor Peter T. C. So is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Biological Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, MA. He received a B.S. degree in physics and mathematics in 1986 from the Harvey Mudd College and a Ph.D. degree in physics in 1992 from Princeton University. Professor So joined MIT as a faculty member in 1996. Professor So has published over 75 research papers in refereed journals, over 30 refereed conference proceedings, many book chapters, and numerous scientific abstracts. He is also the co-inventor of five patents related to microscopy and instrumentation.

Barry R. Masters is a visiting scientist in the Department of Biological Engineering
at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a visiting scholar in the Department
of the History of Science at Harvard University. He was formerly a professor in anatomy at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA), the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Professor Masters has published 81 refereed research papers and 128 book chapters and articles. He is the editor or author of Noninvasive Diagnostic Techniques in Ophthalmology; Medical Optical Tomography: Functional Imaging and Monitoring; Selected Papers on Confocal Microscopy; Selected Papers on Optical Low-Coherence Reflectometry and Tomography; Selected Papers on Multiphoton Excitation Microscopy; Confocal Microscopy and Multiphoton Excitation Microscopy: the Genesis of Live Cell Imaging; and with Peter So, Handbook of Biomedical Nonlinear Optical Microscopy. Professor Masters is a member of the editorial board of Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology. Once the US was the only country in the world to offer a doctorate for studio artists, however the PhD in fine art disappeared after pressures established the MFA as the terminal degree for visual artists. Data collected through in-depth interviews examine the perspectives of professional artists in the US who teach graduate level fine art. These interviews disclose conflicting attitudes toward this advanced degree and reveal the possibilities and challenges of developing a potential doctorate in studio art in the US.

Jessica B. Schwarzenbach is a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and Lesley University, USA and an artist and independent researcher who has published in the areas of education and qualitative methodology.

Paul M.W. Hackett is Professor of Ethnography, Research Methods, and Consumer Behavior at Emerson College, USA and holds PhDs in fine art and psychology.
