About the Author

Ian Haynes is Professor of Archaeology at Newcastle University. He has worked on Roman sites in Britain, Italy, Germany, Romania, Bulgaria, and the Czech Republic, and is currently project director of excavations at Maryport, Cumbria. Professor Haynes was formerly chair of the archaeology committee of the Roman Society and is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, and a trustee of both the Clayton Trust and the Vindolanda Trust.

At long last ...... a true story of who really fought the Roman wars and conquest that lead to its long future strength and dest

I think it is important realize that the majority of the Roman conquest from the late Republic and throughout the whole Priceipate and future Empire . Was almost wholly achieved by an army and legions of recruits . Who were not from from land area we now call Italy.

The late Repuplic began its usage of recruiting a specialized force to supplement its area of weakness such as heavy Calvary and the expertise area of archery and slingshot. With the coming of Pompey and Caesar and their personal agenda of conquest and their need for an army outside the jurisdiction of the Senate . Started the first large recruitment of non Roman citizen armies.

The massacures of the Civil Wars and a population tired of wars was only too willing to allow Augusta to do the Roman people a favor by never recruiting again from the civil population of Italy again . The future legions of Rome would be supplied by the Provencies . Those non citizens ( with future promise of Roman citizenship) would forever do the dying for Roman conquest!!!!!!

This book finally tells this story . At long last an almost full story and gives credit to the past limited reseachers!!

Grade 5–7—Grk, a small white dog with black eyes, finds Tim Malt near Tim's London home, setting into motion a series of fantastic, heroic, often fast-paced and sometimes humorous adventures. Grk belonged to Natascha Raffifi, the daughter of Stanislavia's ambassador to England. When a cruel dictator takes control of this small, mountainous country in Eastern Europe, the Raffifis are arrested and returned to their homeland. Tim's parents will not let him keep the dog, and so he sets out to find its owner. His ingenuity gets him from England to Stanislavia, where he is propelled into action that ultimately reunites Grk with Natascha and her brother, Max, and results in their escape from prison. Some characters are caricatures; many are likable and move the events quickly if implausibly to a satisfying resolution. Max, in particular, is used to insert occasional political commentary that seems to foreshadow his future. By novel's end, the children and Grk settle in with the Malts in London, with the promise of another adventure in which the murder of Max and Natascha's parents will be avenged.—Maria B. Taking brave but drastic action, Tim flies with Grk to Stanislavia and learns the ambassador and his wife are dead and the children, Natascha and Max, are in prison. Soon Tim is embroiled in wild events and political chaos. Despite some stock characters, this is fast paced and entertaining. The author-narrator maintains a presence a la Lemony Snicket, interjecting satiric, sometimes thought-provoking commentary on politics and economic privelege, along with warnings of dire events to come. Fun AND intelligent!

Grk is one of those rare books that doesn't treat kids like dumbies.

Tim's adventure is fun, interprising, intelligent, whimsical and very satisfying. It's a really good, inventive story, not just a rehashing of Harry Potter or just another depressing magic/vampire/unhappy homelife book. He relies on himself, his own emotional and intellectual resources, and has an adventure 10 times more fun than any vampire has ever had.

Scary stuff happens, but real scary stuff, not stuff made up of darkness and magic. And it's all stuff Tim handles with typical Brit wit and composure, which makes the story even more humorous and exciting.

If your kid is ready for something fun AND intelligent, this is the book for him/her!

The TSE was revised in 1996, but the retired version is still available and referred to as the SPEAK Test. The TSE consists of three warm-up questions and twelve rated questions. Raters assess students' proficiency in the areas of language function (such as giving an opinion), appropriateness, coherence, and accuracy (which includes grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, and fluency).
Toward Speaking Excellence teaches the fundamentals of good communication as well as specific test-taking strategies. Also included are explanations of how the TSE and SPEAK tests are rated, examples of responses at varying score levels, and advice for responding to each of the question formats. Practice exercises within each unit help the users apply this knowledge. Each unit concludes with practice questions similar to those found on the tests including sample maps, picture sequences, graphs, and announcements that provide realistic test preparation for users.

A very helpful book, but the format of the TSE has changed!

Please note, in September 2003, the Educational Testing Service changed the format of the TSE. Six of the questions included in this book are no longer used on the TSE, and three new questions have been added. This is still a very valuable book to use when preparing for SPEAK test, as that test has not yet changed, but if you are preparing for the TSE, make sure you visit the ETS website to learn about the new changes! And there is now a second edition of this book that will prepare you for the new version of the TSE.

This is the first edition of the only book I am aware of that prepares students for the TSE and SPEAK tests. It is used at my university in test preparation workshops and ESL classes.

The book explains how the test is scored and what the rating criteria are. I believe this is very helpful, as many students worry that their answers must be linguistically perfect to get a good score. It also provides descriptions of each question type, time limits, and strategies to use for answering questions well.

The book includes practice questions that students can use to get familiar with the format of the test. This is very important, because one of the most difficult things about taking the test is getting used to the format and kind of questions asked. Once you are comfortable with answering these kinds of questions, you can let your true speaking skills show.

The book is not perfect. Some of the questions are better written than others, and there are a few typos. However, for the price, this is a very useful book. I agree with the last reviewer that it is important to get feedback from a native speaker as much as possible when using this book or any other test preparation book.

Worth the money

I am the director of an ESL program at a major university, and I recommend this book to all the students who ask me for help on the TSE or SPEAK tests. We use it as a required text in our immersion program for incoming students as well. I believe it is the best book currently available for TSE prep. To get the most value from the book, I recommend that you find a native speaker to give you feedback on some of the exercises. Well worth the investment.

Test of Spoke English

As an ESL instructor, I teach people who need to pass a test of spoken English. This is required in many states for those in medical fields as well as other areas where proper pronuciation is essential. Please note that the TSE (Test of Spoken English) for which this book was designed has since changed to a different format but this book is still helpful. In addition, many students from many countries are very familiar with this book and have it in their own languages, so this is something with which they are familiar. There are very few good TSE books available, so this is a great choice. Please note that this is NOT the book to buy for TOEFL.

It's OK

I'm a huge fan of Kathy's. I think her stand-up is hilarious. She has some priceless bits, like her recollection of Brooke Shield's wedding. I stayed up all night reading this book.

Some of her revelations are entertaining and juicy, like how Tupac couldn't read, and John Hamm is a drunken lout. The biggest thing I didn't like is her celebrity worship. She gushes like a crazed fan about certain celebs as if she doesn't realize she's "one of them." She's surprised when a celeb recognizes her, but they'd have to be living under a rock to not know who she is. She's been on TV for decades, and she's known for skewering celebs. They all have to be aware of her, out of fear, if nothing else.

Not your usual space opera.

Read this book. It's the most original sci-fi I have read in a decade. Maybe ever. Unique characters, engaging plot and a thoroughly entertaining experience.

Original, Fascinating, and Complex...Exactly What I Hoped For

I had to make it more than halfway through the next book in my pile of books to-be-read before I felt like really analyzing Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie. It was a lot to process in a reasonably small novel.
The story follows a protagonist that is the final remaining aspect of a massive ship-based militaristic AI, confined to a human shell. While the ship was still "alive" and operational, these human shells with minds replaced by the AI were known as ancillaries, essentially tools of the ship to use in place of soldiers and other functionaries. The author handles the character with a consistency that is admirable as the story jumps back and forth in time to build up the back story while unveiling the main narrative as it progresses toward an intense climax.
At heart it's a story about revenge and an exploration of consciousness (human and AI alike)...but there is much more to it than just those two superficial elements. Redemption, colonialism, human nature, and war are all placed under the lens while the non-human protagonist pursues her/its objective. We, as readers, get introduced to a massive (gender-neutral, in which everyone is referred to by feminine pronouns) empire spanning numerous star systems, led by a tyrannical individual who has cloned herself into numerous ancillaries as well, to become a distributed consciousness spread across the galaxy...but within whom there is a fracture, and the leader is working against herself in subtle and not so subtle ways to undermine the opposing side. Just typing that was confusing, and it says a great deal about the quality of the author that it isn't disorienting within the book.
I have to read the rest of the series to know for sure, but based on this first novel of the trilogy, Leckie has certainly cemented herself as being one of the most original and talented minds recently working within the science fiction genre.

Interesting gimmicks far outrank the main course.

Without spoiling on plot too much here there are some nice concepts in this book that, unfortunately, only seem to -approach- badassery.

There is this whole dismantling of gender identification which is, although at first really off putting, ultimately a fascinating sort of experiment in forcing the reader to perceive the characters in a way they haven't before. I couldn't stop self reflecting on my difficulty getting past this; that made for an interesting reading experience for me.

Then there is the whole concept of Ancillaries and the main character recounting events from multiple POVs at once. Very cool.

And yet I never felt enveloped by any of it due to strangely bland and often cryptic internal monologues by the main character. A character who walks an inexplicably fine line between behaving like a machine intelligence and an emotionally charged and vengeful human: a concept in machine evolution that no effort was made to explain.

Add to this a truly interesting plot flawed by a climax in which nothing much happens (no real badassery, just the potential for it?) and I feel a bit spritzed on after this one... when every indication of the first 40% or so felt like it was going to be a tidal wave.

I understand why it has received the acclaim and recognition it did, I think this is her first book too. But it was a bit lightweight for me. Not much interested in reading the next one. Gonna go see if there's any more Alastair Reynolds I've missed :-)

A Must Read

This is an excellent introduction to the breadth and depth of Black Studies. Karenga treats the subject with great care and the details of a scholar. He provides a great bibliography to help the reader locate the views and ideas of others. This book is also great for classroom use. Students love it. You will grow with this book. It is well written and easy to follow. He systematically builds each chapter for the reader. It is a classic and a must read for anyone who is remotely interested in Black Studies. I highly recommend it!

I.B.S.:An Excellent Analysis of Black History & Culture

The Introduction to Black Studies by Dr. Maulana Karenga is an invaluable contribution to history and humanity in terms of its afrocentric context in analyzing and accurately introducing the rich and varied history and contribution of continental Africans, African Americans and other Black peoples through out the World African Community to its readers. This book is a must read not only for those in college classes, it should also be used in high school curriculums, Rites of Passage programs and adults alike. I have yet to find another introductory text that gives such a comprehensive analysis of Black life in dignity affirming terms than the I.B.S. The structure in which the I.B.S. is presented to its reader provides for smooth transitions from one category or subject to another. Dr. Karenga appears to order the table of contents in the order of the seven basics areas of culture, i.e. Spirituality and Ethics, History, Social organization, Economic organization, Political organization, Creative Production and Ethos. The origin of this cultural structure is developed from the Communitarian African Philosophy, Kawaida, which means, "Tradition and Reason" also created by Dr. Karenga. More on Kawaida Philosophy can be found on page 173 of the I.B.S. The reader of the I.B.S. will also discover that Dr. Karenga uses category's that provides a logic of liberation in suggesting alternatives to the dominant society's views and values, in how they relate to the views and values of African Americans and other Black peoples. After each subject, Dr. Karenga has provided the reader with study questions and an extensive reference list from which further research and study can take place. Again, I highly recommend the reading of the Introduction to Black Studies and keeping it in one's personnal library as a major reference source.

An Introduction to Black Studies is an excellent book for all those interested in understanding African and African American history. No book can capture the total history of a people, but Karenga does give you an exceptional look at a wide variety of historical and cultural components. This is a "text" book. It is not a novel. This is not the book that you read for pleasure. It is for information. I used this same edition in my I.B.S. class and it changed my life. I actually was looking for a later edition when I saw the reviews. I couldn't believe what people were saying about the book so I was forced to write something. I always have highly recommended this book as a must have to a person who is interested in African Studies. And I will do it again here...you should buy this book.
