I've always loved to write, but after my first attempt at a novel (nine chapters of Plastic City, the story of underwater-dwelling orphans in the twenty-third century that I wrotein the sixth grade), I took some time to get my bachelor'sdegree and to try my hand at other careers before I returnedto my first passion: creative writing. After lots and lots of perseverance, hard work, and a bit of very good luck, My Darling Caroline went on to win the Romance Writers of America's RITA� Award for Best First Book of 1998.

I live in Texas with my family, exploring history as Idelve into the hearts of my characters.

Wonderfully Real

Adele Ashworth has created real people in Duke of Sin. The emotions ring true and have you turning the pages feeling you know these people. The mystery has some actual mystery to it. I made several wrong guesses in the course of the book before banging my head and saying 'Of course!'. The solution makes perfect sense - I just missed it.

Two examples of realism - the first comes when the hero is explaining to his friend how he became involved with the heroine - he sums it up along the lines of 'So I said I'd give her the manuscript if she became my companion'. Instead of shock or dispproval or any of the usual best-pal novel reactions, the hero's pal proclaims him a genius and swears he WILL use that ploy in the near future. I laughed. The second is something I won't spoil - but the hero reveals it only to his friends. He never tells the heroine. This moment is much more satisfying than the standard gut spill every hero starts doing about page 243.

If you have a low tolerance for sex scenes, be warned - this book is very hot. Generally you would find me complaining about that but Adele Ashworth has written them into the story and the characterization so seamlessly that I found myself reading and not skimming until the last 3rd of the book. (Normally I hit the first one and skip ahead). Rather than detract from the story they really do advance it and enhance it. Great read.

I REALLY liked this book. Great writing, great character development, more to the story than just a light-hearted romance. I really liked the two lead characters. I could pick apart a couple of un-realistic aspects of the story (her being a virgin still @ 35, him living in seclusion with only his servants for the last 5 years) but I enjoyed it so much I am not going to.

My only complaint is the Title of the book & the picture on the back of the book. I felt like I needed to hide it from my kid's. I was afraid it was going to be a really trashy romance. It was not. Really only one "R Rated" sex scene.

He's called the "Duke of Sin" but the only sin he committed was being wrongfully accused of murdering his wife. Again, this is the best romance story I have read in a long time. I will be looking for more from this author.

I was surprised so many reviewers focused on the inconsistent eye color. My husband, me & our 3 boys have a mix of eye color depending on what shirt we have on. I never even caught this & it seems a weird thing to get hung up on. Again, it was a good book.

Wonderful Chemistry between the two leads...

this is the first book i've read by adele ashworth and it definitely won't be the last! duke of sin, while flawed in a few ways, is ultimately a great story because of the two lead characters. the heroine, vivian rael-lamont is strong, independent, and forthright with her emotions. rarely does the hero have to guess how she's feeling. she is candid and honest about them whenever he inquired.

the hero, william raleigh, duke of trent, is just as candid, which brings a mature voice to this story. it's not a love story between an experienced hero who falls in love with an innocent and naive chit, this is a love story between two mature adults who aren't afraid to say how they feel or tell each other what they want, and THAT'S why i love this story.

the emotions here ring true and are never melodramatic. ashworth does an amazing job of depicting the characters in a way in which the reader can see the vulnerability they share because of the hardships they've experienced in their lives. despite what other reviewers have said, i DID see the chemistry between the two and saw the love develop on a deeper level. i could see it because vivian and william were fleshed out so that the reader could see all facets of them, which made the reader understand why they would fall in love with each other.

the one main weakness of the story was the plot. the blackmail plot was so convoluted that even when it was resolved, i still didn't quite understand what had happened. however, the pace of the book was such to where the plot meant little to me because the focus was always on vivian and william, which is how i like my romance novels. so what if the secondary characters weren't drawn out? it didn't hinder the development of the love story between vivian and william, so i didn't care. it made the whole thing more intimate.

one strength of the plot was that william guessed early that vivian wasn't a nefarious creature bent on ruining him. he knew she was being blackmailed, so the reader was spared all of the crap that goes with misunderstandings like that: cruel treatment of the heroine at the hands of the hero followed by the heroine desperately trying to convince the hero she's telling the truth. sure, there are a couple of secrets that vivian held close to the vest, but they were ultimately revealed in such a way that the hero didn't doubt her, except for one time and his friends help him recognize the fact that she's innocent of any wrongdoing against him so it only lasted for a second.

and BOY...those love scenes were as hot as they come. ashworth is gifted in both her description of sensual tension and verbal foreplay, all without it ever becoming a vulgar thing. there were also some, um, UNUSUAL love scenes here. let's just say that william can be a bit overeager and finish things before they begin. the fact that he couldn't control his desire DEFINITELY made him sexier in my eyes.

while i do agree that some of the dialogue was more sophisticated than i would have expected for victorian england, frankly, i found it refreshing. just because it's not the usual dialogue doesn't mean it's not likely to have existed. i'm not a stickler for that kind of thing.

so in the end, strong character rendering, burnng sensual tension and some of the most luscious love scenes i have ever read, made this a good story in my book. if those are the kinds of things you look for in a romance novel, then pick this one up. if you're more of a stickler for accuracy in historical data, are uncomfortable with graphic love scenes, or are easily distracted by a weak plot, then you probably won't like this book.

A good start

This is a promising work from someone new to the Anglo-Saxon literature. Petru Popescu is Romanian, and therefore his style and language are not as polished as expected from your average American author. His Latin lyricism translates oddly at times, and his descriptions are long and detailed. Character developing is uneven, but this is a minor sin compared to other aspects you will find worthwile.
Overall, it's a good book, and shows an great interest in social studies. This twist brings new life to an idea as old as Arthur Conan Doyle's "Lost World". Give it a chance - if you want more than other (similarly-priced) brainless slam-bang, you might like it.

I found this book on a clearance rack $3!I was on vacation and wanted a distraction,so I thought it was a good deal.Little did I know what Mr.Popescu had in store for me.This book is captivating for anyone with a love of mans early history.The sheer amount of research that he put into this novel must be applauded.I look forward to wraping myself up in his next novel.

An Unexpected Find

I bought this book two years ago at a "dollar store" during an ice storm which left us without electricity for two weeks. There wasn't much to do so I bought this book thinking it probably wouldn't be too great; I mean I spent three bucks on it at the dollar store. But, I hoped it would ward off the boredom. I didn't get to start reading it until a month ago and was I ever surprised. This is a great book! As the last reviewer stated, it's a great way to teach science through fiction. I had never put too much thought into how humans evolved. I have even found myself watching The Discovery Channel to find out more about the protohumans.

Great Beginner Book

I recommended this book to a friend that was just starting to play the guitar and didn't have time to take formal lessons. A few weeks after going through the exercices in the book, he developed a good foundation of technique. You can't go wrong with Tomo Fujita as the author.

pretty lightweight book

I teach guitar for a living, and like the other Berklee press books. I was expecting another successful book. But this one missed the mark. It aims to teach contemporary principles like power chords in an easy, uncluttered way. It does do that, but with a couple unfortunate side effects: 1) a huge amount of blank space ...there's more open white spaces on many of the pages in this book than information and 2) the exercises are so basic or short that they don't give young players enough to get them excited. In other words, they may be super clear, but I fear they also may be super boring.

Best Guitar Book for Starters

If You are just starting to play a guitar get this book. It is very clear and is almost like hand holding. When you start you need this and not a play like Van Hallen book. Start small and work up. Also buy the cheapest guitar you can find. The reason is if you can play great on junk you will be a far better guitar player down the road.

A hair raising adventure in the Australian outback!

The Australian desert is no place to get lost in especially when you are being chased by terrorists! In this, the fourth book in the series, Sam Fox (14) has persuaded his older brother Nathan (23) to take him exploring, visiting a cave Nathan discovered a few weeks back on a desert safari. Once inside the cave they discover a skeleton. Is it a T-Rex? No! Nathan thinks it is probably some kind of super 'roo. Wanting a photo to prove where he has been, Sam poses for a photo beside it. As the flash goes off, Sam jumps a little, touching the 'roo which starts off a chain reaction creating a rock fall! Nathan is buried and suffers a broken arm, leg and possibly some ribs. "A stretcher case" as Nathan says!

What to do now? Nathan instructs Sam to take the jeep and head to Gibson Station four hours away. As a typical teenager, Sam knows what he should do but doesn't always do it! His adventure starts when trying to escape the scorpions in the cave. Forgetting how the cave was situated, Sam jumps out and lands in some spinifex! Ouch!

"Thumpa! Thumpa!" What's a helicopter doing out in the desert? Terrorists! Aagh! Join Sam in this madcap adventure as he tries to outrun the terrorists, gets shot at, comes face to face with dingoes, meets an Aborigine named Emu and so much more. Will Sam be able to find help for Nathan in time?

Adrenaline filled, I didn't think this book was quite as good as Shark Bait (Book 3) and I certainly had figured out the ending before hand. HOWEVER I am an adult. Our kids LOVED it! It is well-written and clean so no worrying about what your children are reading. We'll be reading the next one soon!

I Bought the record back in the early 80s, then the CD, and this year the live DVD, I have listened to and loved this album for 30 years, It will always remain a favourite and now I can hack away on the guitar with the help of this TAB book. Its a further tribute to the musical and poetic genius of Black Sabbath and their collaboration with the vocally gifted Ronnie James Dio. This music is a gift! R.I.P Ronnie.

The title character of attorney Grippando's second thriller (after The Pardon) is the anonymous man who contacts Miami Tribune reporter Mike Posten and claims that he can predict the next victim of a serial killer who has eluded the FBI's Child Abduction and Serial Killer Unit. The informant wants to be paid in cash for what he says he knows. After a brief debate, Posten and his paper pony up for a series of exclusives. Posten also talks to the FBI, in the form of agent Victoria Santos, who is alone in believing that the informant and the killer are different people. It's an unusually cerebral and low-key beginning to a serial-killer thriller, emphasizing procedure, forensics and professional ethics rather than shock or even suspense; the killings that occur during this set-up take place off page. Soon enough, however, the informer/killer question is resolved and Grippando moves his story into more familiar territory, telling an absorbing tale with cool competence. The murders are given a plausible motive and the climax, which takes place on a hijacked cruise ship, surges with tension; even Posten's marital problems are tied neatly to the plot line. A diabolical serial killer is traversing the country slicing out the tongues of his seemingly random victims. In a stunning twist on the otherwise tired serial killer theme, reporter Mike Posten of the Miami Tribune is contacted by a man claiming to know the killer's patterns intimately. As the "informant" extorts more and more outrageous sums for his uncannily accurate predictions, Posten and FBI agent Victoria Santos forge an uneasy alliance. While FBI brass are convinced that they are dealing with one man, Victoria remains loyal to her gut instincts. Ultimately, she must acquiesce to using Mike as a lure in a stand-off with the killer aboard a cruise ship. Public libraries will want several copies of this potential best seller.

Another great thriller by James Grippando

James Grippando's second novel, The Informant, is not your average serial killer thriller. A series of murders is taking place across the country, and the only thing that ties them together is the manner in which the killer mutilates his victims. The FBI is baffled, and the agent in charge, Victoria Santos, has few leads until Miami Tribune reporter Mike Posten receives a phone call from a man who claims he can predict the next murder. The informant says he's not the killer, but his mind works like the killer's, enabling him to predict not only the next killing, but the time, place, and victim, too. When the predictions prove true, the FBI must decide whether Mike has been talking to the real killer, an accomplice, or something else.

Fast-paced and suspenseful, The Informant is one of the best thrillers of 1996. In addition to all the action, there's plenty of mystery and surprising plot twists. A perverse killer and a creepy informant who may or may not be one in the same are among the factors that make this story stand out among the crowd. Some of the violence in the book is graphic, reminiscent of James Patterson, but the reader will be rivited to the story. Grippando's first novel, The Pardon, was good, and The Informant proves that his name should be associated with today's best thriller writers.

Overall I think it was a great book, it was very realistic and really held my interest. It was never boring, and it kept a fast pace, the tension keeps getting higher and higher. The book is about a serial killer that murders people all over the US. In the book you follow FBI agent Victoria Santos who teams up with Mike Posten, reporter for the Tribune. Mike Posten is getting calls from a person who says he is an informant. This informant says he can predict the murders before they happen. A Gripping Tale of Forensics & Criminal Profiling

On the trail of a serial killer, FBI special agent Victoria Santos eventually teams up with Pulitzer-prize winning journalist Mike Posten when he begins receiving anonymous messages from a caller who claims to be able to predict the name of the next victim BEFORE they're murdered. As the pair reach the crime scenes they discover that the murders appear to be linked by certain physical evidence. Following the trail of victims, they must determine whether the caller is the real killer or an informant. The story follows the action from victim # 1 to the end with interesting sub-plots that add intensity to the overall story. The suspense is nonstop; a thrilling page-turner that keeps you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end.

Worst Textbook Publisher

Do not spend the money on the additional expense of ConnectPlus!
Save yourself the money; rent a Kindle edition and purchase a Connect Registration code for your online homework.

McGraw Hill falsely claims an eBook that is not viewable on devices with eReaders ie iPad, Kindle, etc., but through a web browser only, with no page-by-page reading option. And if you do want it accessible offline, your instructor has to "create" the text on McGraw Create, and you have to purchase it from that website. As it does not qualify as the eBook with your $300 purchase. As for the eBook browswer, It also does not support the eBook "standard" features of a highlighter and post it notes. Instead you are only able to arrow/tab pages left and right, skip pages, search terms, and print. When asked why this feature wasn't supported, The McGraw tech support staff said, "It's just not." And when I asked how I can prevent overpaying in the future for a feature that isn't available, they told me I had to call McGraw customer support every time I'm interested in a book to ask if all eBook features are fully supported. These unsupported items were never disclosed, and I could even search the help FAQs for questions answering this issue.

Do not waste your money on this product! Rent and buy Connect only. You can spend $90, instead of $300 .

There are two rentals for this book, one is for just the book only for $29.99 and one with the connect card for $88.16

For some reason it has the reviews for both rental links which confuses everyone. Those who rented book only for $29.99 are posting that it didn't come with the access card. If you want the access card, order the $88.16 and it will come with a unscratched code.

Written by accountants, for accountants (but not for students)

I have to agree with a lot of the other reviews. There are various issues with this textbook that will leave you with a severe dislike of managerial accounting and a less than stellar grade. To preface my review, I used this textbook during the Fall 2012 semester for an independent study online course in my MBA program.

1. Each chapter is too concise. The concepts are often explained in the language of accountants and you'll only get one example of (or one way to view) a particular concept.
2. The end of chapter homework does not include an answer key or explanations. Your only way to really practice the concepts is by using the online access component, which is shoddily designed and also not helpful. Believe it or not, a lot of students prefer to work with a paper, pencil, and calculator.
3. The online access component consists of three parts: practice homework, regular homework, and quizzes. The problem I frequently encountered was that you would work through the practice homework and feel fairly confident about your understanding of the chapter, but then the regular homework would completely blindside you and have no similarities to the practice homework. The quizzes were a toss-up as to whether they related to the homework concepts.
4. There seemed to be a lot of errors in the online component where none of the answers to a question were correct. From what my professor told the class, this was due to a mix-up between the 15th and 16th edition answer keys.

I know that some of these are typical student complaints, and I'm one of those people who does not "get" accounting, but in an independent study course, the book is all I really have to learn the subject matter. To be a good reviewer, I have some suggestions in case the authors are reading this review:

1. Please be consistent in your terminology when explaining concepts in each chapter. For example, if you use the term "earnings", please continually use that term throughout the rest of the chapter instead of switching to "profits". This is a really base example, but not all of us are professional business jargon speakers. Studying should be about learning the concepts, not developing a mental thesaurus of the various terms that describe cost of goods sold.
2. If you must use the online component, please check for consistency between the practice homework, regular homework, and quizzes. The presentation of problems and concepts tested should ideally be presented in a similar manner between the three, with the difference being in level of difficulty.
3. Give us back the end of chapter homework! Unless, of course, the end goal is to gain another $50 for a poorly executed online access component?
