Categories for Types, by Roy L. Crole

This textbook explains the basic principles of categorical type theory and the techniques used to derive categorical semantics for specific type theories. It introduces the reader to ordered set theory, lattices and domains, and this material provides plenty of examples for an introduction to category theory, which covers categories, functors, natural transformations, the Yoneda lemma, cartesian closed categories, limits, adjunctions and indexed categories. Four kinds of formal system are considered in detail, namely algebraic, functional, polymorphic functional, and higher order polymorphic functional type theory. For each of these the categorical semantics are derived and results about the type systems are proved categorically. Issues of soundness and completeness are also considered. Aimed at advanced undergraduates and beginning graduates, this book will be of interest to theoretical computer scientists, logicians and mathematicians specializing in category theory.

Excellent introduction to categories for computer scientists
By peter@opus.geg.mot.com
The book gives you all of the cateogry theory you need to study type theory. The examples are from domains that are comfortable for computer scientists. The difficult proofs are given in great detail, while other books often gloss over the details.

So maybe the best bet is to use this book as a reference
By Foo Bar
I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, it makes the subject look harder than it really is, because it's so detailed. On the other hand, it spells out all the details, so if you're not clear about what the details should be, well, here they are! And for the more complex languages (polymorphism, etc), it's essential to get the details right. So maybe the best bet is to use this book as a reference, when you need it, but learn the basics somewhere else. Read Lawvere's thesis from 1963 -- it's all in there.

How to Build a Time Machine, by Paul Davies

With his rare knack for making cutting-edge theoretical science effortlessly accessible, world-renowned physicist Paul Davies has won a devoted readership with his bestselling books The Fifth Miracle, About Time, and God and the New Physics. Now Davies tackles an issue that has intrigued humankind for centuries-is time travel possible?

The answer, insists Davies, is definitely yes-once you iron out a few kinks in the space-time continuum. With tongue planted seriously in cheek, Davies explains that to visit the future, all you need is a little help from gravity and a spaceship that can travel just under the speed of light. As for returning to the past, the best bet is to find a convenient black hole equipped with a traversible worm hole-though if you're not careful you may find yourself sucked into a one-way journey to nowhere. Finally, having brilliantly laid the theoretical foundation, Davies sets out a four-stage process for assembling the time machine and getting it to work. He also addresses the ticklish question of why, if time travel is really feasible, we're not swarmed with time tourists visiting us from the future.

Wildly inventive and theoretically sound, How to Build a Time Machine is creative science at its best-illuminating, entertaining, thought provoking, and fascinating in every way.

From Publishers Weekly
Is time travel possible? If so, what manner of machine would one need to traverse this fourth dimension? Covering ground similar to J. Richard Gott's Time Travel in Einstein's Universe, this slim, tongue-in-cheek treatise invokes the primary tenet of Einstein's special theory of relativity that both time and space are elastic to illustrate that time travel, while impractical, is definitely possible. The time travel mechanisms Davies (The Fifth Miracle) envisions are dramatically different from the devices that SF authors H.G. Wells and Ray Bradbury have employed in their fiction. All that's needed to travel to the future, noted theoretical physicist Davies asserts, is a little help from gravity and a spaceship that can reach speeds just under the speed of light. Traveling to the past is a trickier task, however, and Davies spends the bulk of his book explaining the components needed to construct a wormhole (a black hole "with an exit as well as an entrance"). Despite the author's penchant for diagrams and his habit of highlighting and repeating his major points, readers will struggle to accept some of his more difficult and extreme propositions such as the existence of an exotic matter possessing antigravitational properties, which is vital to his construction of a wormhole. While Davies's discussion of the paradoxes inherent in time travel and of the physical laws that seem to prevent it is both thought provoking and accessible, his limited focus on wormholes may disappoint those hungering for a broader discussion of time travel technology.

From Scientific American
Is time travel possible? Yes, says Davies, who recently retired (in his early 50s) as professor of mathematical physics at the University of Adelaide in Australia to concentrate on his writing. But "a moment's thought uncovers some tricky questions." Whereupon he discusses lucidly and engagingly both the concepts of physics that establish the possibility of time travel and the tricky questions. You could reach the future "by simply moving very fast." For visiting the past, the most popular proposal is a wormhole, "a sculpture in the structure of space that provides a shortcut between two widely separated spaces." There may be "cosmic taboos," though, that make time travel forever elusive.

Editors of Scientific American

From Booklist
A time-traveling machine can be constructed--provided one rotates a superdense cylinder of infinite length or locates a wormhole. Such are the contraptions contemporary physicists such as Frank Tipler and Kip Thorne (Black Holes and Time Warps, 1994) have conceived in their explorations of whether it's possible to build a time machine. Davies, also a physicist, has an impressive track record of writing popular titles about space-time (e.g., About Time, 1995), and he opens up the fascinating yet weird concept of time travel to readers new to the basic features of space-time. That does not mean his precis is simple, but it is lucid throughout, even sketching out the four technical parts required in a time machine that exploits quantum effects. And if a machine were actually built, many paradoxes would arise, which Davies explores in an inventive manner. An excellent explainer, Davies will well reward the curious bent on bending space-time. Not a magical view
By N. Coppedge
I prefer this book slightly more than Brian Clegg's book by the same title. It introduces an essentially scientific view of time travel, and in that respect is easily imitated, and not entirely without merit. I found the content, because of the scientific view, somewhat boring and familiar.

For the curious engineer and the scientific theorist alike.
By A Customer
Those with a theoretical interest in time travel will appreciate Davies' attention to explaining in detail the intricate theory behind the components of time travel. I think the real winner though will be the engineer with a slant toward the practical application side. Davies' presents a potential design (complete with flow diagram!) of the process steps needed to construct a time machine. Theories of black holes, worm holes, gravity, anti-gravity, causality etc. are presented in crisp yet coherent detail.
As a literary style, I at first didn't care for the many cartoon type drawings which decorate nearly a quarter of the book, but as it went on I realized that not only where they illustrative to the the book's finer details, but also a symbol for the fanciful possiblity of time travel. Reader's with further interest will also appreciate the detailed bibliography.

(Diane Lilly.GLAM Magazine).

About the Author

By Laura Caballero

If you already have the other two books in the series was in love and this is the icing on the cake.
The love story of Jason and Gillian is the most beautiful I've ever read. As a friend, without noticing, ends in love, pure and simple.
I lack words to describe this book. I'm just saying that if the other two books in the series (BOMBON and first love) I liked and I loved it (as em my way) I love this from the beginning, as in the other two books we see how the relationship Jason and Gillian.
Final book in a series that for me is a must read and reread.

Wonderful, vibrant and a bit quirky
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:mo3R8XGZ82AO5GA]]Here's the artbook for director Jorge R Gutierrez's 3D animated film The Book of Life. Gutierrez was born in Mexico City and raised in Tijuana, and in this 192-page hardcover artbook, you'll see that the inspiration for this film comes from his hometown and the rich history of Mexico.

Highlights of the book are the designs for the characters and environment.

As far as character designs go, The Book of Life definitely has some of the weirdest and quirkiest designs compared to other 3D animated movies. Their costumes are heavily decorated and lushly coloured. For example, the goddess La Muerte wears a huge red hat with burning candles on top and little skulls hanging around the rim, and the bottom of her red dress is also covered with burning candles.

Many characters are actually puppets with exposed joints. Main character Manolo has stars, hearts and skulls plastered all over his boxy costume. Skeleton versions of the characters look great with fanciful skull designs just like how some tribes like to create artworks out of skulls. Even the bull Toro Muerto has its horns intricately carved with symbols.

The artworks are very much inspired by Mexican folk art. Gutierrez gets his inspiration from lucha libre, mustaches, street taco stands, bullfighting posters, Spanish comics, spaghetti Westerns, etc. The result is a very colourful and visual world.

The environment art for the Land of the Living, Remembered and Forgotten have influences from ancient civilisation such as Aztec, Mayan and Olmec. It's interesting to see the artists use those influences and design them for an animated film. If I don't know anything about the film, I would have thought the civilisation in the film celebrates colour.

There are lots of details to look out for. In the Land of the Living, there are several buildings with shapes inspired by Mayan temples. Tombstones are lavishly decorated with ornaments and offerings. Houses in the town are top heavy just like the characters to make them feel more macho. There are commentary throughout that talks about the designs.

The Art of The Book of Life is a wonderful, vibrant and quirky artbook. Highly recommended.

If you only buy one "Art of" book this year
By Andy H.
...make it this one.
There's a review here with a video of a guy flipping through the whole book so no one's gonna top that, but I'm just adding my two cents that this book is gorgeous and a must-have for anyone in visual development. It's amazing to see the intricacy and level of detail that went into every aspect of this film's design. What's most striking to me is how closely the final film actually stuck to the style of the static art. It's common to see stylized concept art that gets watered down and homogenized in the final product - not so with The Book of Life. You can tell a lot of heart went into this production and it actually made it all the way onto the big screen. Easily one of the most beautiful and intriguing "Art of" books I've come across.

Beautiful and Inspiring
By Michael Z
The book is simply gorgeous. There are so many details you miss in the movie just because the images are in motion and you are absorbed in the story. Sitting down with the book you can study all those beautiful details. For example, skulls and hearts are a visual theme. It is fun trying to count all the skulls in a picture. Just when you thought you've counted them all, you'll find another one.

This movie has such a beautiful and unique look. It is enjoyable to browse the pages and gain insight into the director's design and color choices. As an artist, it is very inspiring book.

Shakespeare and the Goddess of Complete Being, by Ted Hughes

This critical work on Shakespeare attempts to show his complete works - dramatic and poetic - as a single, tightly-integrated, evolving organism. Identifying Shakespeare's use in the poems "Venus and Adonis" and "The Rape of Lucrece", of the two most significant religious myths of the archaic world, Hughes argues that these myths later provided Shakespeare with templates for the construction of every play from "All's Well that Ends Well" to "The Tempest". He also argues that this development, in turn, represented his poetic exploration of conflicts within the "living myth" of the English Reformation. The claim is a large one, but Hughes supports his thesis with a painstakingly close analysis of language, plots and characters.

From Publishers Weekly
For English poet Hughes, Shakespeare was "a prophetic shaman of the Puritan revolution," his plays mythic reenactments of the holy war between Catholic and Puritan fanaticism. This arcane, often farfetched study maintains that the Bard tapped into the "source myth" of Catholicism in Venus and Adonis : the myth of the Great Goddess and her sacrificed god. In The Rape of Lucrece , Shakespeare mined the rival source myth of Puritanism: the enraged Jehovan god who abhors the Goddess for her presumed treachery or whorishness. In this highly speculative analysis, Hughes follows the workings of these two interlocking myths through Shakespeare's plays, whose overall trajectory, he argues, is an attempt to escape from tragic destiny to secular freedom. In King Lear , according to Hughes, Shakespeare reinvented an ancient Egyptian cosmology to illuminate the distorting ethos of the English Reformation. And from Cymbeline to The Tempest , he argues, the Bard used the Gnostic myth about the Female who represents the hero's own soul. Hughes's ambitious critique will appeal primarily to devotees of myth and Jung.

From Library Journal
This is one of the most remarkable books on Shakespeare to appear for some time. Hughes begins by analyzing Venus and Adonis and the Rape of Lucrece , suggesting that the two myths that inform these poems--of the hero who rejects the goddess and is killed in return, and of the god who destroys the goddess--form a fundamental mythic and symbolic pattern that underlies Shakespeare's later plays, beginning with As You Like It and incorporating all the great tragedies and romances. The reader has to be prepared to follow Hughes, the noted British poet ( Wolfwatching , LJ 12/90), through some fairly obscure mythological twists and turns, but it is almost always worth it. Every page is lit up with some insight that makes one think about the plays in a new light. Scholars may be irritated by the lack of documentation (no bibliography, few footnotes, no index), but this is literary criticism of the sort we need.

A step towards understanding Shakespeare
By Roman Paget
“Shakespeare and the Goddess of Complete Being” brings us closer to understanding the Bard’s writings. Ted Hughes has intuitively perceived that Shakespeare’s plays are linked together and constitute a single narrative. In this respect, Hughes’ analysis is similar to Beryl Pogson’s approach presented in her book entitled “In the East My Pleasure Lies” (published in 1950).

Hughes has attempted to extract the narrative by assuming that the key to its unlocking is provided by Shakespeare in “Venus and Adonis” and “The Rape of Lucrece”. Hughes treats these two long poems as an illustration of two sequential events. These events are taking place on two planes, mythical and rational. The first event illustrates the hero who rejects the love of the Goddess and is killed in revenge by a boar. This event leads to the second one, in which the hero rapes an earthly incarnation of the Goddess and is punished for his crime by banishment. Hughes has merged these two events into what he calls the Tragic Equation, a linear formula that, according to him, forms the skeleton of Shakespeare’s canon.

By applying his tragic equation, Hughes has been successful in unlocking a few episodes of Shakespeare’s plays, which otherwise remain invisible to the rational mind. For example, he was able to trace down the origin of Caliban (“The Tempest”), to deduct the presence of the Third Duke in “As You Like It”, and to identify Parolles as a distracting inner self of Bertram in “All’s Well That Ends Well”. At the same time, and very much like Mrs Pogson, Hughes completely misunderstood the functionality of several other characters. According to Hughes, Lucio in “Measure for Measure” is “the priapic demon”; and melancholy Jaques in “As You Like It” is Shakespeare himself. Then he reversed the roles of Gertrude in “Hamlet”, Don Pedro in “Much Ado About Nothing”, and (like every writer, critic, and scholar before him) allowed himself to get into Iago’s trap in “Othello”.

Hughes’ misunderstanding is caused by a couple of imprecisions that have crept into his thinking pattern. The first imprecision is related to the overall functionality of Hughes’ equation. Namely, his equation describes a sort of a vicious circle. Hughes’ fascination with and knowledge of ancient mysteries have allowed him to identify such a vicious circle within the myths and other occult traditions. The ancient myths and occult ceremonies are a record of an evolutionary disruption that was caused by an event that occurred in antiquity. As a result of this antiquated event, humanity ended-up in evolutionary chaos. But these mythical episodes belong to the past. It seems that Hughes does not realize that, in the meantime, the situation has changed. The mythical or archetypal forces do not operate anymore in the same manner. Shakespeare dedicated his writings to illustrate how it was possible to break out of that mythical chaos and bring humanity back on the right track. This constructive change is symbolically marked by Shakespeare in his first long poem as Adonis rejecting Venus. Hughes has perceived the significance of this episode (e.g., page 61: “The god, who, throughout history and prehistory, had loved the Goddess of Love as totally and unconditionally as she loved him, had suddenly ... rejected her. This abrupt innovation crackles with outrage. The ancient momentum of the great myth has been brought to a dead halt ... .”) But Hughes misinterpreted this change. Hughes employed his erudition combined with quite an impressive intellectual gymnastic to reverse Shakespeare’s illustration and bring it back into the ancient chaotic mode. What Hughes did not perceive in Shakespeare’s plays is the presence of constructive forces. Hughes’ tragic equation does not include these constructive forces. This is why his equation is not complete. By their very nature, the constructive forces manifest themselves in a subtler and gentler manner. In the plays they are overshadowed by more dynamic and boorish destructive forces. The constructive forces are intentionally presented in such a way that they are invisible to the rational mind.

Without these constructive forces, Shakespeare is not Shakespeare anymore. This is further illustrated in “Two Noble Kinsmen”, where the constructive forces have been deliberately removed. In this way, Shakespeare provided a contrast play to help the audiences, and his readers, to recognize the subtle forces in his other plays. Hughes perceived the sterility of “Two Noble Kinsmen” (page 564: “And yet it lacks something essential, that Shakespeare normally puts there. … It is psychologically static.”) But again, he misunderstood the purpose of this deliberately sterilized play (page 565: “As a result, the tremendous athlete, resting under his mulberry, never even got into condition for the job”).

The second imprecision of Hughes’ analysis is his disregard for the times and places in which the plays are set-up. He has assumed that the plays are independent of time and place. But this is not so. The plays are aligned along a very precise historical and geographical route. They illustrate from where, how, and when - evolutionary forces were gradually brought to Western Europe.

Despite these imprecisions, Hughes’ analysis marks a significant progress towards a fuller understanding of Shakespeare’s cannon. It brings Shakespearean critical analysis onto a higher level, i.e., above the background noise generated by the sterile rationality of orthodox scholarship.

I am going slowly, slowly through this book as it is so intense, scholarly, and brilliant. And when I get to the end of a section, I think I need to go back and read it again. But so highly worthwhile. This is certainly a book on Shakespeare and the Goddess but it is also a history of the search for understanding in the Western tradition, its sources, and its various manifestations. Ted Hughes....really, how is it that one person can know so much?!

In the Shadow of the Alamo, by Sherry Garland

Fifteen-year-old Lorenzo Bonifacio never intended to be a soldier. But when the soldados raid his tiny Mexican village, Lorenzo finds himself forced to join General Santa Anna's army . . . all because of the pesky goatherd Catalina and the haughty Esteban Equivel, son of the wealthiest landowner in the region.
Taken under wing by the kind Sergeant Ildefonso, Lorenzo and Esteban endure boredom, exhaustion, and hunger as the army makes its way across Mexico to San Antonio de Bexar, where rebellious norte-americanos have barricaded themselves inside an old mission called El Alamo. Neither boy can imagine what lies at the end of the march--defeat, death, glory?--and neither can accept the price paid during the fight for Texas.

From School Library Journal
Gr 5-8-Although Lorenzo Bonifacio is only 15, he is conscripted into the Mexican army for 10 years. At first, he and Esteban Esquivel, the 17-year-old son of the wealthiest landowner in the region, have nothing to do with one another, but in the end they become friends. Life in the army is vividly described, and the bloody battle scenes are realistically drawn. Hardships such as the lack of food, arbitrary justice, and the total loss of personal rights are part and parcel of this military experience. The conscripts are given outdated weapons and are not trained for battle as they are considered mere "cannon fodder." The women and children who followed the men, including Lorenzo's aunt and two younger sisters, suffer the same hardships, and many do not survive the arduous trip on foot to Texas. Santa Anna is portrayed as cruel and self-centered, desiring personal glory at all costs. Enduring physical hardships and personal tragedies, Lorenzo is transformed from a simple farmer to a soldier, and from a child to a man. Told from his perspective, the story provides a different point of view on a well-known historical event. Readers will sympathize with both the Mexican soldiers and with the rebels. A book that captures and holds young people's attention.

From Booklist
Gr. 6-8. Fifteen-year-old Lorenzo Bonifacio, who has never left his Mexican village, is conscripted into the Mexican army and soon finds himself with troops headed to retake the Alamo from North American settlers. The journey is hard, but Lorenzo finds solace in unexpected friendships and belief in the cause. However, when the battle finally occurs, his beliefs are challenged and his perspective is broadened as he comes to realize that triumph and tragedy and heroes and villains aren't as easily defined as he thought. In this entry in the Great Episodes series, Garland offers an alternate viewpoint of a well-known American historical event through an intimate, lively narrative that engages and informs. Along the way, she interweaves details about Mexican culture and the daily life of the times, some Spanish terms, and historical background. Lorenzo's character growth and development are realistically and sympathetically portrayed in a story that illuminates the impact of war across class and cultural boundaries. Some sources are noted at the back, and a glossary is appended. Shelle Rosenfeld

Shows the "other side" of the Texas Revolution.
By Rebecca Herman
Nine years ago, Lorenzo's father was conscripted into the Mexican army, leaving behind Lorenzo, his little sister, and their pregnant mother. They never heard from him again. The year is now 1835, and life in their small village has not gotten any easier. Since his mother's death four years ago, Lorenzo has had to care for his two younger sisters. He believes the family is cursed and never expects to see his father again. While working in the fields, Lorenzo and some of the other village men are conscripted into the army to fight in the Texas campaign. Lorenzo, at fifteen, is too young to be conscripted, but the local landowner's son lies and says he meets the age requirement. Lorenzo is forced into a war he doesn't believe in, as his aunt and sisters join the other camp followers. Tragedy after tragedy follow on the long winter march to Texas. Their ultimate destination: the Alamo. The author has written a wonderful historical novel showing the "other side" in the Texas Revolution. The Mexican soldiers are portrayed as ordinary men who were forced to join the army and had no choice but to obey their superiors. I highly reccomend this book.

In the Shadow of The Alamo
By A Customer
The book In the Shadow of The Alamo by Sherry Garland was quite interesting. The book gave people a different perspective, it told the story in the Mexican point of view. The story was told by a 15-year-old boy named Lorenzo Bonifacio. He was a normal boy that had no wishes to be in General Santa Anna's army, but nonetheless was drafted. He cursed at the rich Esteban Esquivel for putting him there. Esteban lied to the military drafter saying that Lorenzo was in fact 16 years old, just the right age to join the army. Bonifacio pleaded to the military officials saying that he was only 15 and wasn't ready to join. The officials said nothing and continued drafting. Lorenzo knew that nothing could be done so he decided not to make any trouble, and especially not to desert, because deserters would get whipped on the back or worse even killed. Lorenzo's aunt and little sisters insisted on coming with him to carry his bags and other belongings. All the recruits were to march a long way to a city where they would receive training for war. After many days of long and tiring marching, the group finally arrived at the city. Exhausted the group set up camp and soon were around fires cooking their food. Lorenzo brought with him a small wooden flute and started to play a tune. All the people that heard the tune turned their head and listened to his beautiful music. When General Santa Anna heard the music he ordered Lorenzo to be his personal musician. After the recruits were trained they were issued guns and soon left camp. Lorenzo's troop was to head for the Alamo and kill all the rebels, (the Americans). It was a long and hard journey trough the woods and soon it became winter. Many people died because of the severe cold including both of Lorenzo's sisters. The general forced his men to keep moving and before long they had arrived at the Alamo. Lorenzo's troops were forced to charge without any cover from artillery, which arrived later. Many men died at once but the Mexicans won because of their numbers. Lorenzo's "friend" Esteban had a mortal wound and died a couple days later. Even though they won the battle Lorenzo felt like they had lost it. In the many days to come Lorenzo found that the Americans had regrouped. The Americans attacked them and killed everyone and even captured General Santa Anna. This was just a brief summary of the story In the Shadow of The Alamo and you should read it to find out more!

Alamo Aveneged!
By Roger Kennedy
This is a stirring story of a young Mexican peasant who is press-ganged into Santa Anna's army, as it prepares to march North into Texas to fight the Texan rebels at the Alamo and San Jacinto. While historical fiction, this is still a worthy book.
The author has paid close attention to historical details, and has correctly listed Mexican generals, regiments and battalions. While intended for young adults, older readers will find this an entertaining read as well. The story brings light upon the suffering and privations that the Mexican army endured in order to fight this campaign. Seen in this perspective, the legendary Texas heros of the Alamo seem mere mortals, and our sympathies go out instead to the poor, bedraggled, Mexican soldiers. While not one of the great armies of the day, the Mexican military suffered from chronic shortages, poor quality officers, and corruption. Not the least of its problems was in the form of Santa Anna himself, who lead irrationally, often marching his soldiers into the ground with little concern for their well-being. The Presidente's arrogance and vanity only compounded these problems.
At the Alamo 600 Mexican solders were sacreficed to his vanity. Had the great Napolean of the West waited a few more days for his siege guns to arrive, he could have reduced the Alamo Mission to ruins, and achieved his victory at far less cost. This book points out the dismay the Mexican soldiers felt from his arrogant and detached leadership. The humilating defeat at San Jacinto would end the forlorn Texas campaign and set the stage for the far greater conflict with the United States nearly a decade later, where Santa Anna would again lead his country to defeat.

Everything I expected it to be and more!
By Amazon Customer
The book is great! My 8 year old and I really enjoy reading this together and marking where we want to go etc. It comes with a map, coupons and sample schedules. It's very detailed. I know it will be helpful in making the most of our vacation. A must have! The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because the book came damaged. The cover had a crease in the corner. The damage was not big and definitely didn't make me want to return it, but I'll admit I was a little disappointed.
