Hunting the Shadow. By Geoff Thompson

Carl Jung wrote about shadows and described them as part of the unconscious mind consisting of repressed weaknesses, shortcomings, and instincts. He also said: `Everyone carries a shadow," and the less it is embodied in the individual's conscious life, the blacker and denser it is.

There is a movie called `Legend of Earthsea', based on the Earthsea books by `Ursula Le Guin', which tells about a young wizard Ged who after using a dangerous spell releases an evil shadow spirit. Throughout the first part of the movie he runs from it while being hunted and almost killed by the spirit. After being saved by his old mentor, the mentor advices him to own the spirit where after Ged hunts the spirit. At the end Ged realises that this spirit is his very own shadow-self the dark part of himself. He names the shadow and thereby dissolves it.

Geoff Thompson, before he was a writer of about 40 books, a filmmaker, a personal growth guru, world famous martial art and self-defence instructor, he was a depressed young man with many shadows. One day he decided to change his life and started to overcome his shadows by facing his fears one by one until he had to face his biggest fear; violent confrontation. This led him to become a doorman in Coventry's most violent nightclubs for nine years.

Within the pages of 10 easy to read chapters Geoff shows you how he overcame his shadows and how you can do the same with yours. The book starts with a nice poem about fear by Hafiz, the author of `The prophet' and a phrase from the `Bhagavad Gita', the holy book of the Hindu's. The book explains about what shadow is, how to recognise, how to hunt and how to dissolve the shadow.

Eventually we learn to recognise those fears as energy and learn to put it use to create great things. Hence the second part of the title; How to turn Fear into Massive Success.

I highly recommend this book to anyone prepared to make the leap of fate and live a courageous life.

what a joy

Elsie De Wolfe is acknowleged as the first woman to make a fortune as a decorator and can be called the first life style maven of the 20th century. Her opinions on home decor were eagerly seized upon by millions of aspirational women around the country. She wrote The House in Good Taste 90 years ago but it's just as fresh and suitable now as it was then.
I can't bring myself to agree with her on patchwork quilts, lace curtains or rocking chairs but she's absolutely correct in her advice on wallpaper, paint and apartments. It's amazing how much this delightful and informative book still has to teach us.

I bought this book when it first came out. I tried reading it, was (too) quick to call it 'trite' and gave it away. Later my boyfriend gave me a copy (not knowing that I'd tried it before) so I had to slog through it. I am so very glad I did. Ms. DeWolfe has a unique style of writing that must be understood before you will truely enjoy the book. She has a wit and charm that is backed by such sincerity that few designers today could pull this level of writing off. The book will make you want to find more by or about this stylishly pragmatic decorator

Brass Beds, Lace Curtains, Rocking Chairs be gone!

This book was a surprise. Written in 1914 it seems current. I had delayed reading this classic, to my regret. De Wolfe's wonderful book is back with an updated introduction and several additions in the note section at the back that refer to today's decoration. It also includes the reasons behind her dislike of Eastlake furniture--which is just fabulous stuff, especially when re-upholstered in a updated print (the same goes for most Victorian furniture). I agree with her on her dislike of brass beds and lace curtains...but she also disliked rocking chairs...and for that, one must consider she never had a baby...

First, a lot of what she said is relevant then, as it is today. There is a big difference though, and that is simply put, people do not have her kind of money...so in some ways her advice has a bit of Marie Antoinette feeling to it. That shouldn't surprise as she lived across the street from Versailles.

Her writing is vibrant,and conveys the person behind the taste. She loved chinoiserie, fireplaces, leopard print, stripes, chintz and trellis. Would she fit into a Nate Berkus world...no...but decorating tastes move on and one can see a hint of Elsie here and there. Though I still prefer Sister Parish by far...Elsie is a close second.

"Found" is a terrific, dark coming of age story...

I came across "found." quite by accident and could not put it down until I had finished the last page. It is a dark coming of age story about an eleven-year-old boy who discovers his older brother is a serial killer. If I had to compare it to anything, I'd say it's a bit like "Ordinary People" with regards to its characters and their family dynamic. But Mr. Rigney takes this into darker territory -- first in the vein of "Stand by Me," and finally in the vein of "Texas Chain Saw Massacre" or "Audition."

The last few chapters spiral into some of the bleakest, most disturbing scenarios you're likely to read, but this book is also full of provocative themes and beautiful ambiguities. It has a lot to say about racism, homophobia, how horror affects young people, and on how traumatic adolescence can be. And that's just scraping the surface.

I've read the book three times now, and new layers keep unfolding before me. Perhaps most significantly, the book captures a turning point in a boy's life, where he -- almost instantly -- stops being a child and becomes a man, at least in his thinking. It's a violent and bittersweet moment, and Mr. Rigney plays upon it very well.

"found." is a scrumptious, dark delight.

Deliciously demented page turner you can't put down!

It takes a great deal of talent and superb writing ability to blend such gruesome and disturbing imagery with just the right amount of raw emotion, suspense, and perverse humor. T Rigney may have mastered this equation with 'found and other stories'. From start to finish I was lured in then captured and completely consumed as I read page after page until there was no turning back. Whether reading 'found' or any of the other twisted tales, you will never be disappointed. And after turning the final page, instead of tossing this book up on a shelf, it is far more deserving of another go. The characters and themes Rigney delivers are so multifaceted and profound that reading this book only once would be a mistake. Almost as inconceivable as not reading it at all. Here's hoping that there are many more dark and demented tales to come!

Well written, intriguing, and disturbing

"Found" is an intriguing and truly disturbing novella dealing with brotherly love, the horrors of middle school, and the consequences of discovering your big brother is a serial killer. (Not a spoiler - you find out on the first page.) Told from the younger brother's point of view, Rigney really captures the cadence of middle schoolers. Perhaps the story resonated more with me because my two sons are around the same ages as the boys in the book. Nonetheless, the novella builds the dread slowly but effectively. Then, the floor drops out from under the reader when everything comes to a logical but no less terrifying end. Good stuff.

The other stories in the collection show that Rigney has other tricks up his sleeves and that he can effectively write in other "voices" as well.

After reading book one with great plot, romance, sex, more laughs in any book read in years disappointed so short and no book 3. Debra Webb better be writing a sequel or her readers may hire the investigator in this novel to track her down and force her to write.

Great book, wish it had been longer. If you read the first one, Dirty, you can get. the gist of this one. I hope she writes more of these, a full length one next time. The characters are great and have great chemistry, you will enjoy both.
