Fun book!

What a fun book! The book is about product design for erotic objects, if you want to explore some intimate objects to use with a love one I recommend this book for some inspiration. ( I personally didn't realize how many options we have!! ) The book has some interesting interviews about designers, shop owners, and other people in the industry. Just one thing don't leave it around if you have young children unless you want to explain some things. Otherwise it was great book. Thumbs up!

I knew, going in to this, that this was going to be a book about 'adult sex toys' (more kindly referred to as "erotic products"), but beyond that, I wasn't sure what to expect here. I think the subtitle, "A Showcase of Modern Erotic Products and the Creative Minds Behind Them," is really key to this book.

This is not a catalog or even a review of modern erotic products. While it does feature some of the newest (currently) erotic products on the market, it does so in an artistic fashion (as opposed to either clinical or sensual) making this more like a coffee-table photo book than anything else. In her preface to the book, author Rita Catinella Orrell (who writes a consumer product design blog) writes: "The products in this book were chosen to appeal not only to lovers of good design, say the casual, curious observer, but also to those lovers of good design with a serious interest in acquiring these pieces." And I'd say this is a pretty apropos statement.

The primary focus here appears to be the design of the products. I think it's safe to say that the sex toy has come a long way from the days of simple vibrators or dildos and cheap plastic vaginal socks or mouths for male use. And yet, the ultimate purpose or result of the product remains the same. So where are the changes? In the quality of the materials in the product and the fine-tuning of shapes, angles, curves, and stimulation additions. What also has changed is the use of technology and the ability to control devices through the use of cell phones.

One of the more interesting products within is the "long distance" sex toys. One company (I won't advertise individual companies here ... you can read the book) packages a his-and-hers sex toy set in which each partner can control the vibration intensity of their partner's toy through their own cell phones. So... while apart, instead of just the sexy talk over the phone, you can add another dimension and actually control the action your partner is getting, while still talking.

There are even vibrators that react to music or specific sounds. Who knew!?

But as is often the case with coffee-table style photo books, the objects within are not the sort that are easily available, or at least not usually in expensive. The above mentioned his/hers toy retails for $400. This doesn't strike me as something for the average couple, but for those who are serious about their sexual toys.

I will admit, with a chuckle, that there were times when I viewed a product and I had no idea how it would be used (I guess I'm a little out of my league here). Fortunately, I may not be the only one as on some rare occasions, along with the classy photography of the product there might be included a very sterile, clinical diagram of the product in use.

Also, along with the product display, there are very brief interviews with some of the leading designers of some of these new products

There is still a sense of taboo surrounding the world of sex - specifically the world of sex for fun or as a pastime, rather than for procreation only - but books such as this show that we're becoming a little more open to talking about and sharing these sorts of things. And as we can make these products more personalized (curves and shapes designed for the uniqueness of an individual's body) the more likely we are to realize that these objects aren't just for 'deviants,' but for anyone who wants to enhance their sensual pleasure experiences. Books like this make us realize that these products are available and that intelligent, qualified experts are always working to design new products. Now if we can work on the product prices and availability perhaps more people would purchase a product of this sort, and not just those whose lifestyle really revolves around these experiences.

Looking for a good book? Objects of Desire, by Rita Catinella Orrell, is a photo book of modern sex toys, presented in nicely photographed, artistic fashion. Put one on your coffee table and see what your neighbors think the next time they come over for drinks.

The design art of adult toys

So, a publisher offers me the opportunity to review a book about, er, intimate toys. Am I going to say no?

No, I'm not.

Let me say up front that this is a book primarily about the design of such toys, not an illustrated manual on their use. So a certain group--you know who you are--can drift off now.

(Although, to be honest, there are some slightly racy pictures in the jewelry and lingerie section.)

There is some fun stuff in this book before you even hit the main sections. One of the up front sections cautions: "Before using any of the products in this book, first become familiar with the manufacture's directions, safety warnings, and cleaning instructions." The introduction is written by the curator of the Antique Vibrator Museum. And so it goes.

The book does open with vibrators. Of many shapes and colors. Some have remote controls. Some can be computer programmed. One has memory and doubles as a "thumb" drive. (Even though it's not designed to be used as a thumb surrogate. Unless you know a guy with very long thumbs.) His and her devices communicate over the internet for when you can't be together.

And more unfolds. Intimate exercisers. Jewelry and lingerie. Men's rings not designed to go on a finger. Replacements for the female body (or at least selected orifices.) Replacements for the male body (or at least one part of it.) Devices designed for rectal insertion. Which might include a faux animal tail. Or, as one description notes, be "boilable, bleachable, and dishwasher-safe, but not harness compatible."

There are products to inhibit conception, and to artificially induce it. There is even furniture upon which to do it.

The range is amazing, but perhaps not surprising. Even absent toy designers people will, it seems, find a way to make almost anything an intimate object.

But back to the book. This is very much a book of images, but not an entirely coherent one. There are two pages of photo credits at the end, and that diversity is evident in the final result. There are gallery quality images, marketing images, and some rather "huh" images. I felt a bit let down by the brief interviews. I expected more to feature designers and be about art, but they range over people from retailers to bloggers. Other than the subject, they read a lot like newspaper interviews of local business owners. How they got into the field, their vision, where the business is going. Perhaps, not surprisingly, there are many versions of needing to design products consumers like. (Or, given the subject, products they get off on.)

Sometimes the short bios of the people interviewed are more engaging than the interview. One begins: "Epiphora claims to have a very discerning vagina." I don't believe I've ever heard those last three words used in that way before. (I will say I think the sketch of her is one of the hottest pictures in the book.)

I guess I would describe this as a coffee table book for people with no kiddies around. Especially if they hang out in lingerie a lot.

Encouragement in Prayer

I've only just started Quin Sherrer's How To Pray for Your Children but I find it so encouraging. It's easy to stop praying when God doesn't give an instant answer. She reminds us that Satan will try to sabotage your relationship with the person you are praying for. How true.

The objective of this book is to guide construction engineers and construction managers in planning, estimating, and directing construction operations in a manner that will attain the best possible results. An appreciation of construction procedures will not only produce a better designer, but it will also be invaluable to the many graduates of such programs who end up directly involved in the construction industry.

In response to industry developments and user comments, this sixth edition incorporates new and revised material to reflect current developments in the construction industry. New and expanded topics include construction use of the Internet (including the web addresses of major online resources), pull scrapers, rental equipment and the rental equipment industry, fire-retardant-treated wood and wood preservation, Superpave asphalt pavement, rapid repair of concrete pavements, hot- and cold-weather masonry construction, the cryogenic treatment of high-wear equipment components, and precautions in safely craning wood trusses, in addition to updated text, illustrations, and references.

Don't waste your money on this.

If I could post "0" stars, I would. By far, one of the wost textbooks I've ever come across! Horrendous math computations that are incorrect. Hardly states in example problems, where values are derived, or how. Everything is assumed, yet, for a student, how are they to assume, if they theoretically never been introduced to these concepts implied by the tables of values. Numerous times, there values just sitting around, and only after a few page flipping and countless calculations, you discover that the author derived a value via interpolation. Even then, values that are interpolated, are not explicitly explained as to why they are utilized. I can't believe the publishers and review committee allowed this edition to be printed. Example, chpt. 7 pg.115. It reads "100-.39.."It should be "1-.39.."...the authors just appear to come off as lazy folks who can care less about educating next generation of engineers properly. Quite frankly, I'm concerned how a person to hold a professional license with so many mistakes like this? I'm assuming the interns probably check all his work for major projects. Aside from that, much of the concepts are not adequately explained. Professors at universities should seriously just avoid using this book. You learn more from googling the concepts, and reviewing slides of a professor who actually KNOWS what he's talking about and teaching.

For Project Mgrs and Supers ?

If you are an excavation or foundation SUB this may be quite helpful, particularly for road building. I found much of the info on ability and capacities of equipment:loaders, cranes, scrapers; concrete and aggregate production, paving, interesting but not info I need as a CM PM to build buildings in cities. If you want to know how to plan the construction of tall buildings, foundation planning, scheduling, staging, etc. don't look to this book. "Construction Mgmt.", which touched lightly on my interest, starts on page 479 of a 550 page book. This book is simply inaccurately titled.

We used this book for our construction equipment and methods class along with the CAT performace manual, and together, I thought they complimented each other quite well. This book is great because it touches on the basics of earthwork and excavation and gets you ready for courses in estimating, scheduling and cost control. I enjoyed using this textbook because the questions make you analyze construction problems from many different angles and not just look from a "here's the problem, here's the answer" point-of-view. *All in all, I would have to say that this a very good and useful textbook.* -M.

About the Author

Tobias S. Buckell is the author of Halo: The Cole Protocol, Sly Mongoose, Ragamuffin and Crystal Rain. His books have been finalists for the Nebula Award, the Prometheus Award, and the Romantic Times Award for Best Science Fiction Novel. He hails from the Caribbean, where as a child he lived on boats in Grenada and the British and U.S. Virgin Islands. When he was a teenager, his family moved to Ohio after a series of hurricanes destroyed the boat they were living on, and he attended Bluffton University in Bluffton, Ohio, where he still lives today. Buckell fell in love with science fiction at a young age, reading Arthur C. Clarke and Isaac Asimov novels when he was seven years old. He is now a full-time author and freelancer.

A Little Bit of Everything

Seeing as no one has voiced an opinion on this new item and I just finished, I have written this review. To give some backround on my knowledge of this subject I have read/played all Halo related products since 2001. I'm going to be blunt and say if your intrested in the universe bungie created this is a great read.

Halo evolutions is comprised of 11 short storys in no chronological order with many different characters (new and old#. Some of the authors involved in this project such as Eric Nylund and Tobias S. Buckwell #Both former Halo authors) sealed the deal.

Pros
- Very spread out storys with varying situations and perspectives
- Majority of Stories are good
- More Halo

Cons
- A couple of stories I found unintresting
- Wish there was more!

Regarding all highly knowledgeabale Halo fans like myself, The story: The Impossible Life and Possible Death of Preston J. Cole is a real treat and considered my favorite of the lot.

All in all this book had a small taste of everything I loved about Halo making a hard to put down book. This was my first review and I'd gladly appreciate feedback. Good or Bad. Thankyou.

It's about time.

I'm not "good" at video games. I've got the reaction time of a sleepy 83 year old on opiates and will always, ALWAYS be put down by the hordes of basement dwelling folk that populate the online, multiplayer landscape. Still, I stick with gaming because nowadays that's where a lot of the good stories are, mostly because games aren't restricted to any hard and fast time limitations they way film and television are. Along came "Halo" a little while back, and all of a sudden one of those great stories was taken from the hands of Japanese RPG characters with goofy hair and giant swords. With "Halo 2," the whole thing got even sweeter, with what is arguably the first FPS storyline that treated its viewers like adults...without a drop of blood, coarse language or any other supposedly "mature" content. Instead it relied on a post-modern telling of the Human/Covenant war that no longer allowed for black and white interpretations of good and bad. Players were forced to steer the Master Chief and the Arbiter through seas of grey, only to see the two intersect at another point of confusion: the eons-old Gravemind, both monstrous and beautiful in its timeless brilliance, abilities, and moderation between the warring races of the Covenant and Humanity.

Then there was "Halo 3." Due (apparently) to the constant nagging of frat boys and terrified children, the once rich and subtle web of stories woven in "Halo 2" was reduced once more to "you are you; they are them; you shoot them." Even the seemingly infinite Gravemind lost his sense for meter and rhyme all of a sudden along with all of Cortana's reason and wit. No explanation for any of this was offered until now. That explanation comes by way of Karen Traviss' "Human Weakness," and is (seriously) the second piece of work from the Halo universe to wrench tears out of me (the first being Eric Nylund's ludicrously exceptional "Ghosts of Onyx").

The fact that this collection of stories wasn't offered at the release of "Halo 3" is nothing short of a travesty to fans of the Halo universe's fiction. The stories that don't fill in gaps in the games' chronology and logic almost seem like an apology for the wait at this point. If that is the case though...apology accepted.
-Fans of the ODST's grandstanding and patriotism get all manner of reasons to salute in "Dirt."
-The abundant history and psychology of the varying Covenant races collected over various media and years (particularly "Contact Harvest") gets fleshed out further with respect to the Brutes in "Stomping on the Heels of a Fuss."
-The crippling, paralyzing horror of the Flood is revisited in sharper detail than ever before in "The Mona Lisa."
-"Blunt Instruments" remind us in so many ways that not all the Spartans match the man-with-no-name attitude of Master Chief, who shows his own little bit of humanity in "Palace Hotel."
-The Spartan III project remains the most interesting and aberrant bit of plot material yet introduced in the fiction, as evidenced by "The Headhunters," which is two parts "Full Metal Jacket" and one part Martin and Lewis.
-"Midnight in the Heart of Midlothian" and "The Return" probe deeper into the minds of warriors with nothing left to lose from both sides of the war...and very different fights.
-What Halo fiction would be complete (or worth any price tag) without Dr. Katherine Halsey dropping in to make you wonder if trying to save humanity is even worth it if we're just going to stay rotten to one another. It's a question she's posed several times, but never with as straight a finger aimed at herself as in "Pariah."
-And though it is by no means my favorite of the bunch, I can not stress enough how brilliant Eric Nylund is for making the thoroughly technical, formulaic military briefing that is "The Impossible Life and Possible Death of Preston J. Cole" into something so entertaining. I understand Alex Garland (of "28 Days later" fame) was already paid a vast sum of money to pen a Halo movie script, but for a clear understanding of the whole mythology (and not just the Flood) Mr. Nylund appears to have everyone beat in spades. I won't say I'd be surprised if they didn't pick him up for some rewrites at the least...because how often do these things go the way they should? But I will say that in a just world, the final words in a Halo film's credits would be "Written by Eric Nylund."

The stories may be shorter than the novels and games that preceded them, but they each make up for it in their intensity and understanding of the reader's sophistication. With that in mind, if you're new to Halo universe, this is not the place to start. If, however, you think you've finished the fight, this collection will remind you that there's no such thing.

Great for Halo fans, especially those seeking shorter stories

I've read every Halo novel as well as both Gears of War novels which were written by Karen Traviss who penned one of the stories in this book. This is a great installment in the Halo series and a great read. It's kind of like they held a contest and asked a bunch of authors to submit their stories to see who is the best Halo writer.

I personally think they are all quality reads. Some, of course, are better than others. The one by Karen Traviss fits her style (relationships based#. Really the best two are the ones from Eric Nylund as the other reviewer said #he writes about Admiral Cole#. Nylund wrote the best Halo novel to date and his short story is tied #in my mind# for the best of this book. Will somoeone please give this guy the Halo movie screenplay contract, he's the best Halo story teller there is in my opinion. The other great one is from a newcommer #to me and to Halo# by Jonathan Goff called the Headhunters. I wish those two stories went on for hundreds of more pages personally.

Nothing against the other authors by the way, all of the stories were great. Its just that when you put 11 different stories by 12 authors back-to-back, there is going to be some that are a little better than the others. I also liked the one with John #Mmaster Chief# on new mombassa telling a story that took place during the Halo 2 game timeline but that we haven't really heard before.

Anyway, if you are a Halo fan, you will love it. At least a few of the storis will really appeal to you #if not all#. If you liked the Gears of War novels and haven't read Halo, you'll like these as well #not just the one by Traviss).

ANTHONY W. ADDISON, PHD, is Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at Drexel University. His research focuses on bioinorganic chemistry; chemistry of dioxygen- and NO-binding metalloproteins; and the design, synthesis, and properties of novel chelating agents and macrocyclic and oligonuclear metal complexes. His numerous research articles and conference presentations have earned over 8,000 citations and a Hirsch Index of 37.
