Egypt of the Pharaohs, 3rd edition
By E. Higdon
This is the textbook we use in my Egyptian History course at the University of Alabama. It is a great book on egypt stretching from the old stone age to the Ptolmic Pharaohs.
Interesting to read, I disagree somewhat with Gardiner, but i read the book thirty years after it's first publication. Gardiner's book is essential to anyone wanting to understand Egypt.

interesting for adults

I purchase this book for my 14 year old son since he is very interested in Egyptology. The book was recommended by a tour guide in Cairo. I have to say that it is good for adults since the language is not suitable for teenagers unless they have outstanding reading and comprenhension skills

A classic study and reference for non-classical scholars.
By A Customer
Written by a master in his field and well-written at that, it is no wonder this work finds a place of honor in practically all the bibliographies of succeeding publications. Gardner covers Egyptian history from predynastic times to Greco-Roman, mentioning even the most obscure pharaohs and figures. The plates are exquisite even some forty years after the original photos for them were taken. One's only complaint might be that, since the format guidelines were somewhat different in the 60's, there aren't two spaces after each sentence, but this only takes a couple chapters to get used to. For a closing statement, I recommend you obtain this book so that you may read Gardner's own, for its closing statement rings with the charming chivalry that Gardner and many of his contemporaries practiced.

New York Times bestselling author Tana French is “required reading for anyone who appreciates tough, unflinching intelligence and ingenious plotting” (The New York Times). An Amazon Best Book of the Year

In bestselling Tana French’s newest “tour de force” (The New York Times), being on the Murder squad is nothing like Detective Antoinette Conway dreamed it would be. Her partner, Stephen Moran, is the only person who seems glad she’s there. The rest of her working life is a stream of thankless cases, vicious pranks, and harassment. Antoinette is savagely tough, but she’s getting close to the breaking point.

Their new case looks like yet another by-the-numbers lovers’ quarrel gone bad. Aislinn Murray is blond, pretty, groomed to a shine, and dead in her catalogue-perfect living room, next to a table set for a romantic dinner. There’s nothing unusual about her—except that Antoinette’s seen her somewhere before.

And that her death won’t stay in its neat by-numbers box. Other detectives are trying to push Antoinette and Steve into arresting Aislinn’s boyfriend, fast. There’s a shadowy figure at the end of Antoinette's road. Aislinn's friend is hinting that she knew Aislinn was in danger. And everything they find out about Aislinn takes her further from the glossy, passive doll she seemed to be.

Antoinette knows the harassment has turned her paranoid, but she can’t tell just how far gone she is. Is this case another step in the campaign to force her off the squad, or are there darker currents flowing beneath its polished surface?

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of October 2016: Detectives Steve Moran and Antoinette Conway are now partners on the Murder Squad. They’ve been handed a case that at first looks like every other low-energy domestic they’ve ever been given--but during a routine interview, the murdered woman’s friend drops a clue that leads them to suspect this could be bigger than they had imagined. Much bigger. Contentious squad room politics add to their frustration as the detectives are led in conflicting directions by red herrings, dead ends, and warped perceptions. The Trespasser kept me happily discombobulated, guessing at an ending that I didn’t see coming. And that is what makes Tana French one of the best thriller writers out there. --Seira Wilson, The Amazon Book Review

Praise for Tana French:
To say Tana French is one of the great thriller writers is really too limiting. Rather she s simply this: a truly great writer. Gillian Flynn
French is a poet of mood and a master builder of plots. Maureen Corrigan, "The Washington Post"
One of the most distinct and exciting new voices in crime writing. " The Wall Street Journal

French does something fresh with every novel, each one as powerful as the last but in a very different manner. Perhaps she has superpowers of her own? Whatever the source of her gift, it s only growing more miraculous with every book. Laura Miller, Salon.com
Praise for"The Secret Place"
Terrific, terrifying, amazing, and the prose is incandescent. Stephen King
There are echoes of Leopold and Loeb and Donna Tartt s"The Secret History," but the language and landscape are unmistakably French s, as is the way she excavates the past to illuminate the present. " O Magazine

A haunting, beautiful masterpiece.
By Ursula J
The worst part of any Tana French novel, for me, is finishing and coming to the sad realization that it will be another couple years before I am able to experience another novel that leaves the same impression on me. In fact, if anyone has any recommendations as to authors who you feel are reminiscent of French's style of writing, pass them on! I have yet to come across one.

The novel is about partners Antoinette and Stephen who are handed a case that appears easy enough to solve - a lover's tiff gone wrong. While that is the basis of the novel, there are actually several different storylines and so many moving parts to this story that you wonder how it will all weave together. French is particularly adept at writing a story that, while having many twists and turns, never comes at you like a punch in the gut. In fact, as developments occur in the novel, a part of you is left wondering how she managed to pull the wool over your eye enough that it was still a surprise, yet not such a surprise that you had to reread the novel to look for clues as to how you missed it. For this reason, there is no other author in my arsenal that I feel even comes close to her skill level as an author.

Another reason that Tana French is so gifted is because she is always able to create the most complex characters. Her characters are so raw, so deep, that you feel as if you know them. You experience every shift in their case with them; you quicken your breath when they quicken theirs; you need a moment to step away from the novel when things don’t go as planned. You want to reach through the book and tell your characters, BE CAREFUL! when you feel they’re taking unnecessary risks. French is an absolute genius at creating these real life characters whose presence in your life becomes bigger than just fiction.

I have to mention that there is a scene towards the end of the book that I read with a quickening breath and my nerves felt fried. It was as if I was there myself and the suspense leading up to the moment absolutely took my breath away. I’ve only ever experienced such emotions during real life cases I was following on the telly, or documentaries, etc.

Please do yourself a favor and read all of Tana French’s books, if you have not already. Don’t start with this one but begin with her first and then continue. The reason being is because while all of them are amazing, her writing style truly develops as she writes and therefore each one becomes better than the last.

I tried to read this book as slowly as I could, to make it last as long as I could, but I never stood a chance. I would like to thank Tana French for the joy of being able to experience yet another novel that left me speechless.

A must-read for Tana French fans
By switterbug/Betsey Van Horn
What makes Irish writer Tana French so engaging to me is that she combines crime fiction with literary fiction to = mainstream appeal with thematic purpose. I admit, her first two books, IN THE WOODS and The LIKENESS are still my favorites, mainly because of the haunting, elegiac atmospherics that bump up against contemporary issues and pop culture. This one, her latest with Antoinette Conway and Stephen Moran as partnered detectives, concerns a young woman, Aislinn Murray, killed in her apartment, not far from where Conway lives. The new beau, Rory, is a prime suspect.

Conway suspects that if she doesn't solve this one, she is out of the Murder squad. It's her first big case as lead detective, but, for the most part, she has been razzed and dumped on--the only female on the Dublin Murder Squad, and she's also forceful and assertive, something that doesn't go over well with some of the other detectives. She feels that this case could set things right for her. Conway's worries about her job is part of the book's suspense.

As French often does, the question of family and relationships factor in to the motif and the murder case at hand, although at a remove that is handled with care. In the prologue, Conway is remembering how her mother spun quite some yarns about Antoinette’s absent father (an Egyptian prince! A Brazilian guitarist!), so that she never learned the truth about him. This recalled the theme about fathers in THE LIKENESS, and the pain that a daughter suffers in the fallout. In THE TRESPASSER, French explores this, and also casts characters that are willing to mold their lives around the fantasies of others.

Tana Fans (including myself) do not want a review with a blow-by-blow of what happens—the anticipation and coming into it cold bring the warmth to our viscera as the pages turn and we get deeper and more fully into the story. In this, we are thoroughly in Conway’s head, and her thoughts, feelings, and actions are all happening NOW and in the present or immediate past. Usually, it works, but it also has some limiting features, such as weighing it down with exposition. I missed the atmospherics that French has done so well in the past. And there was no opportunity to infer because Conway generally beat me to the punch. Too, we know that Conway is a reliable narrator; she may have a few momentary thinking errors, or doubts, but we are privy to those. The tension, essentially, isn’t commanding. But we care about Conway, and her partnership with Moran, and we come to care about the victim, through other characters.

If you are a Tana French aficionado, this is a must-read. If this is your first visit to the author, go back and read IN THE WOODS, also, for a memorable and eerie murder mystery. THE TRESPASSER may not be French’s best effort, but the provocative theme will register and resonate with anyone who is inclined to live inside the stories of others. The sense of possibility that both salvages and traps you--the frenzy for the story and all its prospects. How hard it is to beat the fantasy, to make yourself into a revision. It's lonely, exciting, impossible, and defining.

Not as good as 1-5
By VH in PA, CA
Before I am even done reading a Tana French Murder Squad book I am frantically searching for news about the next installment.
The sixth book in the series was such a disappointment. It's impossible to care about Conway. As other readers have said, this book is not so much about the murder in the center of the story but more about the dynamics of the Squad. Even after 464 pages you just don't care about the lead detective. The last few chapters with "the gaffer" O'Kelly saved the book.

Adam Craig is burned out. Lead singer of the hard rock band Black Varen, he’s tired of the empty life of groupies, paparazzi, and hotel rooms. Worse, a life in the closet. After the final concert of their latest tour, he flees the afterparty, pursuing memories of lost summers and carefree days, until he passes out on the patio of a shuttered lake resort.

Miles Caldwell is a brilliant artist, tied by agoraphobia and social anxiety to his family’s lodge. Alone but for his parrot, he spends his days illuminating manuscripts and hiding from the complexities of life. When he discovers Adam asleep in a deck chair, he’s furious but intrigued. Adam soon charms his way into Miles’s bed, and they lose themselves in a summer idyll, safe from the compromises and claims of reality.

But Adam’s life, with all it demands, is waiting for him. And Miles, uncertain of Adam’s true feelings, is battling demons of his own. Somehow, the man who’s never home and the man who never leaves it must find the strength to fight for a future together.

A rating....
By Smitten with Reading
My Review:
This book had me riveted from page one and I can't even pinpoint why, but the story was so completely fascinating. I really enjoyed every minute of reading it.

The book opens with Adam...hard-rocker, Adam, on the final night of the band's tour in Chicage. He's drunk and stoned and tired of the party in the motel room so hops in a cab to go to Milwaukee....and ends up at a lakefront resort he remembers from his childhood in Illinois instead. The resort is closed now and has been the home of agoraphobic recluse, Miles, for the last ten years.

Miles is an artist who used to be Mike/Michael. It takes a long time for the full story to come out about exactly what happened to him to make him the way that he is now, but as a reader, you can tell that it was horribly traumatic. Miles is an illumination artist. He lives in one of the cabins on the property of the resort that his family owned. He hasn't left the property in ten years and is shocked to find Adam asleep on one of the outdoor lounge chairs. Because of his life now, he's completely socially awkward most the time. He doesn't understand subtle body-language cues or even sometimes the not so subtle ones. He's not normal...in the book he's described like someone who has Aspergers or Autism which seems accurate. The thing is, he was never that way before when he was Michael.

Adam realizes the changes to an extent. Michael was actually the crush that let Adam know he was gay when he was a teenager visiting the resort. That boy he knew had been outgoing and fun-loving...nothing like how Miles is now.

So you have one of the most famous lead singers in the country and a person who can't leave their property in the woods falling in love...*sigh* Throughout this book, I had no idea how the author was going to fix it so that they could work out as a couple. But *gah* I wanted it to work for them because when they are together on the property, they both are just right. But separate them, and things quickly fall apart....for both of them, not just Miles. It made for a great story.

I loved this book. The artistic aspect was gorgeous...both with Miles' illumination art and with Adam's song-writing. They both express themselves through their art and it's just gorgeous and romantic and beautiful. They also share a love of old movies that was a really nice detail in the story. There were moments in the story that were pure heartbreak and so difficult to read, but in the end I loved the story and was happy that it was one that I picked up. It left me with a smile on my face.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Good characters, but story quality petered out
By A. Katz
I thought the characters were strong and unique. I liked the beginning of the story, but I felt that the later half was not nearly as good.
The characters are separated and I didn't think that they came back together enough for my liking. It only hinted at the happy ending and didn't really satisfy me.

A love story without romance
By AUJenn
Let me start by saying this is a beautiful book. The storytelling is crisp and I found myself invested very quickly. The characters have enough twists to be unique and fresh - from the painter's past and his painting technique to the rocker and his struggles.

My only grief is that while it is a love story, there is little romance.

*** Possible Spoiler *** The characters spend more time apart than together. I love angst and uncertainties mixed into my romance but I prefer that the couple struggles together and grows together. Ultimately, this book felt like it was a story of two people who were forced to find their own path to come out on the other side. So really, how is this a romance?

I recommend this book as a well-crafted, wonderful read that will stay with you for days but in my opinion, it falls short of a romance.

Some worthwhile conf snippets, but very light on contents
By D. frantz
This book is very poorly written by someone who clearly is not a professional author. Difficult to read through the bad grammar. I would have been disappointed had this book not been free. Really needs a professional to review the content.

No way are you going to learn the material needed to pass the Linux+ in these 87 pages. Not a worthwhile read. A few snippets of conf files earns it 2 stars but just barely.

By K. Riley
I bought the print edition. The English in this book is really bad. I suppose it serves as a rough outline for what to study, but I cannot understand what is being said. It is basically unreadable to me. Take a look at the other reviews on this page. If your shill detector throws a red flag, give this purchase a second thought.

A History of St Lucia, by Jolien Harmsen, Guy Ellis, Robert Devaux

A History of St Lucia is the first-ever detailed and comprehensive record of St Lucia's turbulent past. Beginning with the island's geological formation and subsequent Amerindian occupation, this book takes one through colonization by France and England to the rise and fall of the sugar industry, the tribulations of slavery, the feverish hopes and fears of the Brigand Wars and, eventually, Emancipation. After 1838, St Lucia's newly freed people went in search of independence, dignity and respectability: an era marked by the immigration of indentured workers from Barbados, Africa and India, the rise of a peasantry, and a labouring class in search of new horizons. The arduous battle with 'Mr Hard Times' formed fertile soil for a hard-fought coming of age in the 20th century when unions and political parties developed amidst the turmoil of two World Wars and a city's Death by Fire. Forcing 'King Sugar' to his knees paved the way to a new St Lucia, built on the 'green gold' of the banana industry - an era which in many ways came to an end in 2007 with the passing of the architect of independence, Sir John Compton.

the narrative reads like a fascinating story
By John F. Christensen
This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of St. Lucia in particular and the Caribbean in general. It is a well-researched, well-written account of the island's human history, beginning with the pre-Columbian inhabitants, and moving through the devastating history of slavery and the emergence of St. Lucia into the modern world. This is a balanced chronicle, that addresses the history of the exploited and oppressed as well as the colonists who forged an economy based on sugar cane. The authors' coverage of all aspects of St. Lucia's political tapestry and culture is comprehensive, and it sets the stage for those who want to understand the contemporary social and political landscape of the island. Although grounded in historical evidence, the narrative reads like a fascinating story, filled with interesting human anecdotes.
