That's right-Jennings spins this interesting historical yarn about a family of werewolves who make their living herding sheep. This tale is no comedy, though, but rather a compelling, thoughtful story. When Laszlo discovers that Muno, an orphaned Basque girl whose parents were executed as witches, has witnessed his mother's change, he worries that she won't keep the family's secret. Cultural, historical, and geographic details make for interesting reading. Also compelling is Laszlo's desire to come of age, to join his parents in making the change. His first journey to the village alone, his first change into a wolf, and his first experience of caring about another young person are all well rendered. Readers are likely to identify with the werewolf metaphor, which evokes the physical and emotional changes that adolescents experience. Though they have long lived in mortal fear that the cruel local priest will discover their dual nature or simply turn against them, they risk his disapproval and consequently their lives by taking in a young girl who runs away from his service. One of the pleasures of reading this cleanly written fantasy is how natural it seems when Laszlo's parents transform from human to wolf. Another is how gracefully the story folds this element of fantasy into a work of historical fiction. While the werewolf aspect of the story will appeal to many young people, and the scene in which Laszlo comes of age and makes his first transformation is memorable, the shapeshifters and the wolves are the innocents here. The character who represents evil wears the vestments of the established church. Call it irony or revisionist history, Jennings makes his case with dramatic and ethical clarity. Carolyn Phelan

Born into a long line of shepherds, 13-year-old Lazlo lives with his family off by themselves, isolated from the townspeople, due to their foreign accent and ways. His mother and father possess an advantage in their vocation: they can transform into "loup-garou" (what the French called werewolves) to negotiate with wolves in the neighboring pack and protect their flock. When Muno, an orphan girl Lazlo's age, witnesses his mother's transformation while running away from her warden-the town's evil priest-Lazlo realizes that she knows the truth. Yet his desire for a friend impels him to conceal from his parents both Muno's knowledge of their secret and the growing hostility in the village toward them. Taking on the mindset of his characters, Jennings appeals to readers' senses, especially as Lazlo finally chooses to change into a wolf and "the softly fragrant forest... was now a place noisier and smellier than the village square." In contrast to the kindness and integrity of the natural wolves, the "loup-garou" and society's other outcasts, the priest and townspeople emerge as the bestial creatures. Werewolves Are People, Too

Laszlo Emberek is the son of a shepherd living in the countryside outside the rural village of Saint-Eustache, France in the late 1500s. Laszlo and his parents are something of outcasts because of their profession. They also have a secret which forces them to live a more secluded life: Lazlo's parents are werewolves and one day, Lazlo himself will be one, too. However, the Embereks aren't the blood-thirsty werewolves of tv an cinema. Instead, they are shapeshifters who are able to change into wolf form at will.

One day Laszlo discovers that a girl from Saint-Eustache has seen his mother change shape. The girl, Muno, stays with the parish priest and Laszlo become fearfully she will expose his family to Pere Raoul. He is able to catch the girl before she runs away and she reveals to him that she is running away. She agrees not to say anything about his family if he promises not to say anything about her running away. Thus, a bond is formed and gradually develops between the two. Yet, this is the Dark Ages and people are being burned and hung for being accused as witches. Pere Raoul doesn't trust the Emberecks and is determined to bring them to justice.

THE WOLVING TIME isn't a great novel. However, it's not terrible, either. The author does a good job of describing things. The characterization of the characters is also well done. I also enjoyed that the werewolves in the story weren't blood-thirsty monsters, but were just people with the ability to change shape. Lastly, the book also does a decent job of keeping the setting and the details of the story realistic; this is a story that has been researched and not just made up.

However, I was disappointed that the villain in the story is a Catholic priest. That is a clich� that is overused far too often. I also felt that the ending of the book was a little rushed. The suspense in the story gradually builds, but when the climax arrives, it fizzles rather than explodes.
Overall, THE WOLVING TIME is a decent story with some extremely well-told details, good characterization, and some interesting historical background. It also offers a twist on the werewolf story that is interesting.

The Wolving Time

This book is about Laszlo Emberek, a boy who is in two worlds: one in the world as a human, another one is as a wolf; yes, a wolf. His parents, Kalman and Rita, both husband and wife, are already wolves; so far his parents say that he isn't ready to become a wolf yet. Unfortunately, one day a girl named Muno sees his parents change forms while she plans to run away from the priest, Pre Raoul, for she was his servant after he killed her parents and everythings she had. One day she is kept in jail, forced to say that Laszlo were werewolves, thanks to the priest; but luckily she doesn't. However, the priest and the villagers still find them and traps them. As they escape, Kalman and Rita tell him that he is ready - ready to become a wolf. He accepts, and in the end they were able to free Muno and move to a different, friendlier, place.
I liked this book because it was so intense. One minute you are all safe and happy, the next minute you are under pressure. The author is very descriptive, when he describes Laszlo when he becomes a wolf. As it says it the book, " He ducked his head between his forelegs and saw a furry brisket and silvery hind legs and, swishing back and forth behind them, a bushy tail!" In my opinion, it feels as if you are a wolf yourself, and usually things like that, that you can truly feel, are rare.
The book also talks about some very sad yet wise things. When Muno tells Laszlo that she is kept alive while everyone else she had was dead, it was because the priest knew that he couldn't take anything more from her. The only way was to keep her in torture, but alive. For what she wanted was to escape him, and the priest knew that. It is very descriptive, as I had said before.
Another quote from the book was when the village boys first discovered that he was a werewolf, " His ferocity surprised them - and him - and he worried again that he might change." It shows that he is afraid, which is another why I like this book. Despite all things, even if you became something else or someone else is the fact that you will always have fear follow you. In a way I also disliked the book because the plot was too slow. They didn't tell the part of the boy changing till practically the end of the book. Till then, the person seemed to add things to keep the audience waiting.
My least favorite part of the book was when Muno came to become trapped in the dungeon. It irritates me, not knowing what is going on. All of the excitement seems to be holding in you, yet it won't let go. Plus, the author kept her in the dungeon too long. Till she was freed all they ever talked about was where she was, and suspicious eyes lurking around.

I wanted this to be a 5-star book, but ...

why is it always the church that puts the "evil" in "medieval"? Why must the villain always be a corrupt priest?
To Mr. Jennings' credit, Laszlo and his parents are nominally Christian, and the next parish over has a sympathetic priest. In general, though, one gets the impression that all would be right in France if only the church and the nobles were out of the way.
They tried that a few centuries after _The Wolving Time_. It was called the Reign of Terror.
The best parts of this book are the portrayals of Laszlo and his parents Kalman and Rita, as individual characters and as a family. These scenes are filled with love, gentle laughter, and compassion. I only wish Mr. Jennings had made Pere Raoul (the evil priest) as human as the Emberek family. As it is, he is a caricature, easily dismissed as a "them" by enlightened people like us.

G. Bruce Schaalje, PhD, is Professor of Statistics at Brigham Young University. He has authored over 120 journal articles in his areas of research interest, which include mixed linear models, small sample inference, and design of experiments.

Good (not great) explanations, poor proofs, decent coverage

This book was used in one of my Master's level courses. The book was appropriate. There are easier textbooks out there which may be more appropriate for undergraduates (although juniors and seniors would probably be able to handle this one) and there are more rigorous textbooks out there which may be more appropriate for Ph.D. level classes.

Omissions:
This book provides decent coverage of linear regression and ANOVA models, primarily from a theoretical matrix-based perspective, but it only covers extensions such as generalized linear models rather briefly. Topics such as GLM and logistic regression are important (even if they're not "pure" linear models topics), so the limited coverage was disappointing (which may be why my teacher required FOUR textbooks for the class). I was also disappointed with the limited coverage of diagnostics. It is discussed, but only briefly and it omits some important diagnostics. Also, though it isn't totally atypical for a linear models book that doesn't include "R" in the title, it doesn't integrate computing. This book also lacks anything related to non-parametrics.

Explanations and examples:
Aside from what I mentioned in 'omissions', this book covers just about everything else you would expect from an introductory linear models textbook (including a surprising long review of linear algebra) and it does so fairly well. The explanations are generally clear, but not always crystal clear. Graduate students should be able to follow it fairly easily, but undergraduates who don't yet have a strong statistics and mathematics background may have some difficulty, but I doubt too much. The book also does a good job at mixing mathematical rigor with simple explanations in plain English. However, it's a theory book, so don't expect to attain a full laymen's understanding from this book. What you mostly get is the dirty details explained rather well. Of further note, the examples in the book generally do a good job at furthering understanding of the material.

Proofs:
Very, very bad. For many theorems they simply tell you what book to look up the proof in. At least they're nice enough to give you a page number. Also, they over-cite theorems. Many times they simply list some theorems for which the proof would be derived and they don't even bother explaining how to piece these things together.
Theorem Z's proof:
This result follows from Theorem X and Theorem Y.
Theorem X's proof:
See Graybill (1976, p. 126).
Theorem Y's proof:
This result follows from Theorem A, Theorem B and Wang and Chow(1994, pp. 161-163).

Wow, how helpful.

Exercises:
Overall, they are relevant proofs of varying difficulty. They mix easy problems with hard ones, but I would say that problems are not often overly difficult. Most exercises are perfect for graduate students and an instructor could pick out a fair number of problems that are appropriate for undergraduates. Also, the problem set at the end of each chapter usually does a good job at covering most of the important items.
Note: the solutions to all of the homework problems are in the back of the book. Fortunately, they are not as lazy about these proofs as they are about the other proofs.

Overall, it's a decent matrix-based linear models book with an intermediate level of rigor.

A clearly written book, sometimes lacking rigor

Rencher's Linear Model in Statistics provides a good overview of regression and ANOVA theory in terms of linear models. Most concepts are presented in an extremely clear format - probably more so than most theory of linear model books I've seen. Moreover, for those who haven't taken linear algebra for awhile, the book provides a nice review of the basic concepts needed for most of the proofs throughout the book. Sometimes, however, (and I'm speaking as a graduate student in statistics) some of the proofs are not as rigorous as I'd like. Sometimes assumptions are made that are neither clear intuitively nor derived specifically from previously stated (and proved) theorems. The book may be a good guide for those learning the material on their own since it contains all solutions to homework problems in the back. For the same reason, it may not be the best book for a college course.

Grat textbook on this subject

I started reading this book from the very first page, and when I got to the third chapter, I began to find minor mistakes in formulas, like (y-\mu') instead of (y-\mu)' (i.e., transpose is in the wrong place), jj'jj' instead of (1/n)jj'jj' (somebody forgot to divide by "n").

Great content, but I don't give it five stars because I expect to find less mistakes in a classical book like this.

My old copy sucked…

Wow, real opener. Dan made me realize what I was doing wrong and more importantly how to fix it. Last year I kind of felt proud of myself as I hired a “copywriter” for one of my landing pages and I was convinced she was doing a good job (after all she had a master and what not..) Well, she was a good writer and editor but not a good copywriter. So to sum up- my old copy sucked. I just followed a few strategies I picked up from this book and re-wrote a few things myself and wow. Better conversions. I am really excited for what is yet to come as I am not 100% finished with my copy. Plus…even if I hire a freelance copywriter, thanks to Dan’s t teachings I will know whether they do a good job or not. Some food for thought. Added to my “build your marketing muscles” kindle collection.

Great Guide

This is a great manual for marketing, on or offline. Every chapter helps you understand a buyers cognitive biases so you can overcome them. This is of course if you already have a quality product. If you don't have that, sure you'll sell some of them but then crash and burn.

About the Author

Vidar Lerum is an Associate Professor at the Illinois School of Architecture at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, USA. He teaches design studios and design seminars at the undergraduate and graduate levels. His teaching experience includes design studios exploring the path to net zero energy building design, design seminars addressing minimalism in the age of conspicuous consumption, and environmental control systems courses. Lerum's research focuses on energy performance, human comfort and user satisfaction in buildings. He is a licensed architect in Norway and a member of the Norwegian Society of Architects (NAL). He is also a Co-opted Committee Member of the CIBSE Heritage Group and an International Associate member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

Nostalgia comes to kindle at a great price point

I loved Ben Dunn's work as a kid and even met him a couple of times at cons in the Dallas area. Ninja High School is a creative layering of manga cliche through charming story-telling. My only gripe is that the scans make the lettering come out a bit light. I await more volumes on kindle. Thanks Ben Dunn and Antarctic Press.

About the Author

Larry Klosterboer is a certified IT architect specializing in systems engineering. He works for IBM’s global service delivery team out of Austin, Texas. He has more than twenty years of experience in service delivery, spanning technologies from mainframe to networking to desktop computing. Most of that time has been spent designing and implementing service management solutions. Larry currently works as a lead systems engineer for IBM’s large outsourcing customers.

Best book on the subject

I just read this book for the second time, and it's even better than the first time--now I feel qualified to write a review. In my opinion, this is one of the best books on the subject, and more actionable than the five ITIL v3 volumes developed in the UK by the Office of Government Commerce. The things I like about this book are Larry's style of writing and his organization of the materials. It's clear he knows his subject, and the author has a unique way of taking a complex and sometimes confusing topic and making it not only understandable, but actionable--something you can implement in a straightforward manner. Leveraging the intertwined relationship between Change and Release Management, the story reads much better than if they were discussed separately.

After authoring three books, it's pretty clear that Larry has a talent for reducing hard-to-understand technical subjects into logical prose for the common ITSM practitioner. This book is not for the average pedestrian (it assumes the reader has some understanding of ITIL and service management), but it's not overly technical either, and seems to have found a sweet spot of "just enough" procedural detail. The illustrations are simple yet elegant, not fancy or overdone, and very communicative.

The author's step-by-step approach takes the reader from understanding and defining process requirements and workflows all the way through implementing the new processes through tool selection and integration, data migration, process piloting, and finally broad rollout across IT. In the last two sections, Larry presents operational issues that commonly arise, as well as the integration of Change and Release Management with service level goals and other ITIL processes typically identified by senior management for implementation.

All-in-all, one of the best books I've read on these two ITIL processes.

Great ITIL v3 book for mapping the process driven change-and-release management

Good detailed process for change management with insights from his professional experience. The author (Larry Klosterboer) uses language that is clear and concise. Lots of real world examples.

Both change and release management (under Service Transition) and Service Operations are two of the most implemented modules of ITIL v3.

This book is worth the price as you can choose the areas needed most to help your projects move forward.
