About the Author
David Runciman is Professor of Politics at Cambridge University and the author of many books about politics, including The Politics of Good Intentions(2006), Political Hypocrisy (2008) and The Confidence Trap (2013). He writes regularly about politics and current affairs for a wide range of publications including the London Review of Books.

EDUCATING & INTRIGUING!

A deceptively easily to read and very coherent outline of the main historical political processes. The straight-forwardness of the text owes much to the author's abundant knowledge and all round comprehension of almost all aspects of his subject but this should not be confounded with simplicity. Indeed, Runciman raises several interesting and novel ideas for the reader to question: again and again, he raises and then questions les id�es re�ues thereby probing the reader to question the tenets which have been laid down and thereby understand the fundamentals.
The author is, incontrovertibly, a man of scholarship; but, more importantly, he is a profound and singular thinker.

A smug text

A useful, easy to read text on politics. Suffers from blindness to the colonial and imperial dimension of the British state. Analysis is therefore far too smug.
