About the Author
Thomas R. Dye is Emeritus Professor of Political Science at Florida State University. He received his B.S. and M.A. from Pennsylvania State University and his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of numerous books and articles on American government and public policy. Dye has served as president of the Southern Political Science Association, president of the Policy Studies Organization, and secretary of the American Political Science Association. He is the recipient of the Harold Laswell Award for career contributions to the study of public policy and the Donald C. Stone Award for career contributions to the study of federalism. He received the Outstanding Alumni Award in 2001 from Penn State's College of Liberal Arts. Dye has taught at the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of Georgia. He served as visiting scholar at Bar-Elan University, Israel, and the Brookings Institution, Washington, D.C.
MacManus is professor of public administration and political science and past chair of the Department of Government and International Affairs at the University of South Florida-Tampa.

Comprehensive and easy-to-understand

I rented this textbook for my college State and Local Politics class. It covers a wide range of topics and ideas and explains them clear enough so that someone without a background in politics can understand. Lots of graphs and charts are included covering a wide array of data, which I personally liked. I noticed slight political bias on several topics but for the most part the book steers clear of forming opinions of its own. Overall, a good resource.

Boring

The book I rented is in great condition, but the text it'self is probably the most cut and dry I have ever read. On top of all that my professor for this course makes us read every chapter as well as some additional readings. I recommend the 16th edition try to be a little more interesting. If possible.
