"Darwin's Legacy, Scenarios in Human Evolution" is an intriguing book. Its authors, who are familiar with the scientific quest to understand human uniqueness, address an important issue: "How (and why) did we evolve from an ape-like ancestor to our modern condition?" Their innovative method is to examine scenarios that seek to explain the origin of some of our peculiar features (such as walking on our hind legs with a powerful brain balanced on top). The scenarios in this book are not the last word, but they include the best that so far have been proposed for the chosen topics.

This enquiry into the human odyssey is suited for a college course in anthropology or for those readers with some scientific background who are curious about current explanations of human evolution. The authors, biological anthropologists at Sonoma State University, California, have largely avoided technical jargon and their prose style is clear and straightforward. Nevertheless, the reading will be easier if the reader already has some experience in evolutionary science. It seems likely that human evolution specialists will also find something of value in a book of such broad scope.

A major goal is to evaluate scenarios that have survived or emerged in the 137 years since the appearance of Darwin's classic book on human evolution, "The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex". What is the current view of our origins in the light of evidence and analysis that have accumulated since 1871? Each of the 10 chapters is preceded by a quotation from Darwin. His ideas on the topics chosen for discussion show that he had envisioned in outline form many explanations that seem reasonable today, even after the addition of modern genetics and thousands of fossil specimens of human ancestors.

Part I presents background material. Part II consists of seven chapters that examine specific topics, including subsistence (what our ancestors ate and how they acquired it), bipedalism, life stages, bodily displays (to attract mates), language, mentality and culture. These chapters include excerpts from a variety of scenario-writers. This adds an interesting contribution of pertinent ideas from different perspectives. The authors do not simply summarize these scenarios. At the end of each chapter they pick the ones they favor and tell why. The material is well documented with a bibliography that provides access to all of the topics for readers who want to explore them in more detail.

Evolutionary scenarios commonly mix in any factors that might aid the explanation. In this compilation, major themes are the acquisition of food and the interactions (socializing, courting, breeding, communicating, cooperating and fighting) of our early ancestors.

An ideal (if seldom achieved) approach to devising a scenario is to base it on natural selection, Darwin's great discovery. Natural selection occurs at breeding time. Individuals who leave many descendants pass on their genes, thereby contributing to the evolutionary process. Those who produce few or no offspring have little or no effect on evolution. Thus, scholars seek to show why a suggested scenario would have enhanced the reproductive success of those who possessed certain physical traits or were more adept at some behavior (such as walking upright, talking, or throwing). Sexual selection, which similarly occurs at breeding time, is a form of natural selection also discovered by Darwin. It occurs when males and females compete amongs themselves for breeding privileges with those of the opposite sex to whom they are attracted. It not only remains a major theme in our life today, it also helps explain how some of our unusual traits evolved in our ancient ancestors. This book records its role in scenarios attempting to account for penis and breast size, culture, hunting, food-sharing, intelligence, imagination, art, language, singing and other "arts of seduction".

The last three chapters--language, mentality and culture--reveal that scientists have so far found it difficult to separate these topics one from the other. The impression remains that somehow they are inextricably linked, but how? Stay tuned! Science not only marches on, it is also a self-correcting work-in-progress, continually undergoing alterations as new evidence and ideas are introduced. One looks forward to future elaborations of this thought-provoking book.

For those interested in human evolution this will take a prominent place in the library. Parker and Jaffe have organized the work of anthropologists around themes of human subsidence, bipedalism, language, etc. (though oddly broad these themes are omitted from the table of contents). This is not a book for those with a casual interest, or for those requiring simple answers. The authors lay out various "scenarios" proposed by different anthropologists for bipedalism (for example). At the end of the chapter they reveal which scenario they find most compelling.

What we see here is science in progress: ideas competing under academic scrutiny, and truth emerging slowly from the fog of fossil evidence, primate behavior, and the oblique and clever anthropological reasoning. This may be the best book today for succinctly explaining how humans became humans, without skirting the many disagreements that still exist. It's well organized and well crafted and unabashedly academic. Those used to scholarly literature may find it a difficult read. Those who are will be pleased.

The authors thoroughly review the pros and cons of a basic income. It is an important contribution to an intelligent debate on a social innovation that can contribute to the sustainability of the European welfare states - and elsewhere.

Good but not radical enough

This is a comprehensive and therefore welcome exposition of many aspects of the basic income proposal, including its justifications, implications, history, philosophy, economics and politics. The philosophies and arguments of Rawls, Dworkin, Sen, Keynes and Marx are all rehearsed. This extensive coverage makes the book rather longwinded, occasionally rambling and repetitive, a stream of academic consciousness with frequent diversions.

There is no doubt of the appeal of basic income which van Parijs and Vanderborght present well. The problem lies in two main objections – supposed work disincentive, and macroeconomic cost. The authors’ response to the free-rider problem, that others already free-ride, or yet others work without remuneration, is hardly convincing, particularly since a forthcoming paper by Richard McGahey in Ocampo and Stiglitz ‘The Welfare State and Inequality’ (Columbia University Press) cites extensive evidence of the work dis-incentivisation of basic income.

Admitting that localised externally funded basic income experiments do not demonstrate basic income affordability, and dismissing a range of alternative mechanisms to fund BI, the authors scale back to proposing a ‘partial basic income’ funded by income tax which they define only vaguely and do not cost (pp 165-169), but then immediately claim that a basic income of 25% of GDP per capita is affordable (p170)!

Equally unjustified is their summary rejection of the case for basic income from Keynesian demand deficiency in high technology economies (p130), and its funding by money creation (p152). ‘Helicopter money’ they say, ‘can only be of limited duration’. They are limited by their adherence to financial orthodoxy which will never show basic income affordable. They incorrectly interpret the Keynesian demand argument to rely on economic growth, whereas the argument is growth neutral and applies to constant or even reduced GDP. In this casual dismissal, they reject a powerful objective argument for basic income and its funding.

In a thought experiment where a machine is plugged into the earth to produce all GDP output without any labour, and this GDP is distributed by vouchers issued and destroyed each year, then it follows that 100% of GDP becomes basic income, and 100% of GDP is deficit financed. The nuanced claim is that in high tech economies where output increasingly exceeds wage, then basic income is essential and financial deficit inevitable. Recent economic fact supports both these hypotheses. Though radical, this thesis is credible, has huge power as an argument for deficit funded basic income, and is one which the authors should examine further.

Diverse perspectives on employee engagement and the practical implications of emerging engagement theories

What we have in this single volume is an abundance of information, insights, and counsel from several dozen authorities on one of the greatest challenges that business leaders now face: How to increase the percentage of those in the given workforce who are actively and productively engaged. All of the recent research studies that I have examined indicate that, on average, more than 70% of employees in a U.S. company are either passively engaged ("mailing it in") or actively engaged in undermining the success of their company. Presumably the percentages in UK and Canadian companies are comparable.

According to the five editors of this anthology of essays -- Catherine Truss, Rick Delbridge, Kerstin Alfes, Amanda Shantz, and Emma Sloane -- the idea that individuals can be "personally engaged" in their work , "investing positive and emotional and cognitive energy in to their role performance, was first proposed by William Kahn in 1990 in his seminal paper in the Academy of Management Journal. Since then, there has been a steadily growing stream of research, notably within the psychology field, that has sought to further explore the meaning and significance if engagement." Indeed, the most relevant of this research seems to have been cited, if not examined, in the material provided in this book.

The editors are also among the contributors. I commend them on the high quality of their selection, organization, and presentation of the material within four Parts: The psychology of engagement, Employee engagement: the HRM implications, Employee engagement: critical perspectives, and Employee engagement in practice. I also commend the editors on their clever use of seven "Figures" and 13 "Tables" strategically inserted throughout the narrative. For those in need of additional information, there is also an abundance of references to primary and secondary sources.

Here in Dallas near the downtown area, there is a Farmer's Market at which several merchants offer slices of fresh fruit as samples of their wares. In that spirit, I now offer brief excerpts from a few of the essays.

o "The conceptual distinctiveness of engagement vis-a-vis other relevant concepts remains an issue. As would be expected, engagement is related significantly and in meaningful ways to job related attitudes, behaviour, and intentions on the job, employee health and well-being, and personality traits. But the question is: are these relationships that strong, and does engagement overlap to such an extent with other concepts that they are virtually identical? Based on the empirical evidence presented above the answer too this question is 'no', at least for the time being. In addition, it seems that compared to similar, alternative concepts engagement is related in a rather unique way to job demands, job resources and performance. So, taken together, it appears that engagement reflects a genuine and unique psychological state that employees might experience at work." What is engagement? Wilmar B. Schaufeli (Page 25)

o "The third key driver of engagement, psychological availability or the sense that one is ready to personally engage at a particular moment, looks inward from the organizational or job to peoples' experiences of themselves within these systems. Among the studies we have reviewed, we find that individuals' reservoirs of personal resources in the form of general self- efficacy, organization-based self-esteem, and optimism, and personal dispositions in the form of conscientiousness, positive affectivity, and negative affectivity have strong influence over their personal readiness to engage," The antecedents and drivers of employee engagement, Eean R. o "A lot of research has shown that there is much that employers can do to raise the levels of employee engagement...It all boils down to increasing employees' job resources, providing them with challenging job demands, and building their personal resources. In addition, employees may also craft their own job demands and resources, which results in increased engagement. Employee engagement thus seems highest when organizations provide the necessary preconditions for engagement in which employees are also allowed to craft those specific job characteristics they value or prefer. I realize that the perspectives in this volume tend to be UK-centric but I think that many (if not most) of the employee engagement issues addressed are not. Exit interviews of highly-valued employees reveal that feeling that they and their efforts are not appreciated is the reason most often cited as the reason for leaving to work elsewhere. It is difficult (if not impossible) for almost anyone to become actively and productively engaged within a work environment that seems indifferent, if not hostile, to their personal growth and professional development.

No brief commentary such as this could possibly do full justice to the scope and depth of material in this volume but I hope I have at least succeeded in indicating why I think so highly of the content. As for the style of writing, as the three quoted passages indicate, it bears stunning resemblance to one also cherished by academics in the United States. For example, I was struck by the fact that in most of the essays, subjects and predicates are kept far apart from each other. Apparently Winston Churchill's memo about the importance of the declarative sentence never reached their authors. Also, in many of the essays, verbosity is the rule rather than the exception.

This book seems to have been written primarily for the contributors' peers rather than for the general public. Given the fact that most business leaders today have an attention span that resembles a strobe light blink, I question how many of them will read this book.

This book gave a great overview of employee engagement. It is equally useful to practitioner as academic. It touches on a number of key competing theories to help the user understand. At the same time there are a number of case studies which help demonstrate the key ideas. A useful book.

Baron Baptiste began to study yoga seriously at age twelve and trained extensively in all the major traditions before creating Baptiste Power Yoga in the mid-eighties. Baptiste has trained both celebrities and athletes, including Helen Hunt, Randall Cunningham, and Elisabeth Shue, and for four years he was Peak Performance Specialist for the Philadelphia Eagles. This book will not only further your yoga practice, but will help benefit your life. There is one chapter of the book that deals with actual postures and their descriptions, which was very helpful for me, but the other chapters are honestly more beneficial. You can pretty much substitute anything for the word "yoga" and the messages still apply. This book is a life changer. I recommend everyone to read it.

Excellent for developing or enhancing a home yoga practice

I've been practicing yoga at home for a little over two years without ever taking a class. In an effort to enhance my home practice, including perfecting my form and moving into some more challenging poses, I previewed many different yoga books from the library, and Journey Into Power is the one I eventually purchased.
In this book, Baron does an excellent job of explaining how to incorporate a regular yoga practice into your life. Although the book is broken into several sections, including one on a cleasing diet, what I found most helpful was his descriptions of the poses (asanas) themselves. Baron groups the poses into about 12 different categories--sun salutations 1 & 2, balancing poses, hip openers, abdominals, backbends, etc--and then explains how to either mix and match the groupings when time is limited or do the entire 90 minute program.
In his explanations of the individual poses, Baron is clear, precise, and thorough. He begins with a "connecting vinyasa" which explains exactly how to move from one pose to the next. For each pose, Baron talks about setup, allignment, breathing, risk factors, and finally, a suggestion for meditation. What hooked me on the book is that after I read his instructions for Crow pose--a challenging arm balancing pose--I was immediately able to do the pose for the very first time! Baron's descriptive style reminds of Brooke Siler's in The Pilates Body, as he has a similar enouraging and non-intimidating manner.

A Great Companion To Baron's Videos and by Itself!

I've been doing Yoga daily for over 7 years and have a library full of books and videos pertaining to yoga. "Journey Into Power" is perhaps the most useful of all of my books because it is real-life practical.

It is written in a way that gets to the heart of Yoga so that folks like myself (with real life jobs and families) can actually incorporate and benefit from his approach. This is not a book that is just a bunch of philosophical theory, but rather an approach to Yoga and life that is easy to practice daily.

I'm 45 years old and I'm in the best shape of my life thanks to Yoga in general and Baron's work in particular. A MAJOR key to this is the approach to nutrition that Baron clearly lays out (it is NOT a diet, just a common sense approach to nutrition which is very easy to follow). I now have incredible amounts of energy.

Before I started to eat in the way he recommends, I could only do a Power/Vinyasa practice a few times a week and alternated with a more gentle practice. Since incorporating his dietary principles I've been able to have the energy to do some form of Power Vinyasa Yoga almost EVERY day and my more gentle practices are quite rare.

Just for the record, I generally do between 30 minutes to hour or so of Power Vinyasa Yoga 7 days a week, it's rare that I can do the 90 minutes Baron says is the ideal amount, but he also stresses that it's better to do "a little yoga a lot rather than a lot of yoga once in a while". Trust me, if you do even 20 minutes every day you'll have life changing results.

Anyway, The increase of energy that I now have has been an earth shattering breakthrough for me. I had attributed my previous energy level to my age but now I can see just how much impact upgrading my eating has had on my health and energy level (and I was already eating a pretty clean vegetarian diet for close to 17 years).

As far as the physical side of the practice this book is laid out in a very user friendly way. There are alignment tips highlighted in blue print at the end of each more detailed explanation. This "summary" of alignment details is such a great idea that I wish all Yoga books would do this.

As wonderful as this book is, I don't know if I would use this (or any book) as my sole guide to yoga. I would suggest getting one of his videos/DVDs so that you can be led thru the sequence (of course "live" classes would be ideal, but hard to do on a daily basis, perhaps you can suppliment with classes. Home practice is the heart of developing a significant practice and it's hard to find an excuse not to practice if you can roll out your mat at home :) ).

I don't have his "Journey Into Power" Videos in particular, but I do have "Soul Of Strength" which follows the sequence of the book quite closely. I also love His "Unlocking Athletic Power" and "Core Power" which are shorter practices (under 30 minutes) which are very easy to fit in on any morning. Who can't get out of bed 30 minutes earlier to give yourself the gift of a stronger, more healthier body and calmer mind.

A particular video program by Baron that I found really helpful in implementing his ideas is "Transform Your Life, Yoga W/ Baron Baptiste" which is a documentary (PBS) that takes you on one of Baron's Bootcamps in Hawaii, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!, it also has a 20 minute routine at the end of the documentary so you get a nice short Power Yoga Practice ("Power Yoga Basics" is the title of that section).

One more thing I want to clarify regarding Baron's approach to nutrition.

His idea of the fruit fast is to detox yourself. Whether or not it is scientifically valid or not I can't say, but the main idea of the fruit fast is to give you a chance to clean out your body (and mind) for a few days. So much of eating is psychological and you can see in the video "Transform your life" (which follows the plan laid out in the book) how people who never could have imagined that they could live on fruit only for three days not only "survive" it, but totally thrive on it and feel great after 3 days of fruit.

Still, Baron says that the "Fruit" detox part of the cleansing diet is only a TINY part of his approach to diet, his main focus is on the way one would eat in their day to day lives and their relationship to food. The fruit fast is something you might only do one or two times a year (a total of 6 days in a year)and it is hardly a fast since you can eat as much fresh fruit and drink as much fruit juice as you like (tomatos and avocados are included since they are fruits).

In terms of one's normal cleansing diet, he doesn't "Forbid" folks to indulge occasionally, and in facts encourages it so that you don't have to feel deprived. He is not fanatical or dogmatic in any aspect of this program but always encourages to use ones true intuition to know what's right for you. His approach is very practical and possible for anyone who really wants to empower themselves in so many ways.

Anyway, this book is outstanding and I am grateful to Baron for making this available to those of us who are interested in taking a life changing "Journey into Power".

About the Author

Jai B. Kim, PE, PhD, is a professor emeritus of civil and environmental engineering at Bucknell University. He was department chairman for 26 years. Also, currently he is a bridge consultant (since 1980) and president of BKLB Structural Consultants, Inc. Recently he was a structural engineer at the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). He has been active in bridge research for over 40 years, and was a member of the Transportation Research Board Committee of Bridges and Structures. He also served on the Structural PE Exam Committee of the National Council of Examiners and Surveying (NCEES) for many years. He holds a BSCE and MSCE from Oregon State University and a PhD from University of Maryland.

Robert H. Kim, PE, MSCE, is chief design engineer for BKLB Structural Consultants, Inc. He has extensive experience in the design, research, and construction of highway bridges. He has authored and presented several papers related to bridge engineering. Robert’s three books, Bridge Design for the Civil and Structural Professional Exams, Second Edition; Timber Design, Seventh Edition; and Civil Discipline Specific Review for the FE/EIT Exam are well-read by both students and engineers. In 2013, he is working on a bridge rehabilitation design in Connecticut. He holds a BS from Carnegie Mellon University and a MSCE from Penn State University.

Jonathan R. Eberle, BSCE is engaged in research with focus on the seismic design and analysis of structures at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University as a graduate student. He holds a BSCE from Bucknell University.

This book is helpful although it has far fewer examples than I was expecting. For the price I would say it's not worth it. However, if you can find it used for under $50 then I would suggest purchasing it.

Valuable Book That Can Be Used to Prepare for the PE Exam

This book is very valuable;it can be used for preparing for the Professional Engineer Exam. I was able to learn the new bridge design method by following the clear example problems. Also, the separate tables of notations were helpful; I was able to follow the problems quickly. I really liked that whenever notations appeared (in the example problems), the AASHTO specification article numbers were noted. Also, it's a great reference book for both students & practicing engineers. Overall, I rate this valuable book as a "MUST BUY".

A good book, useful for P.E or S.E exam. The negative points are: I do not think that worth more than 100$. Also the total number of example are not that much. I wish they put at least 3 more full problems and explained solution more.

Since the infectious context, the genetic background and medical practice vary throughout the world, this diversity needs to be represented in a pediatric neurology textbook. Taken together, and although brain malformations (H. Sarnat & P. Curatolo, 2007) and oncology (W. Grisold & R. Soffietti) are covered in detail in other volumes of the same series and therefore only briefly addressed here, these considerations justify the number of volumes, and the number of authors who contributed from all over the world. Experts in the different subspecialties also contributed to design the general framework and contents of the book. Special emphasis is given to the developmental aspect, and normal development is reminded whenever needed – brain, muscle and the immune system. The course of chronic diseases into adulthood and ethical issues specific to the developing nervous system are also addressed.

The child is neither an adult miniature nor an immature human being: at each age, it expresses specific abilities that optimize adaptation to its environment and development of new acquisitions. Diseases in children cover all specialties encountered in adulthood, and neurology involves a particularly large area, ranging from the brain to the striated muscle, the generation and functioning of which require half the genes of the whole genome and a majority of mitochondrial ones. Human being nervous system is sensitive to prenatal aggression, is particularly immature at birth and development may be affected by a whole range of age-dependent disorders distinct from those that occur in adults. Even diseases more often encountered in adulthood than childhood may have specific expression in the developing nervous system. The course of chronic neurological diseases beginning before adolescence remains distinct from that of adult pathology – not only from the cognitive but also motor perspective, right into adulthood, and a whole area is developing for adult neurologists to care for these children with persisting neurological diseases when they become adults.

Just as pediatric neurology evolved as an identified specialty�as the volume and complexity of data became too much for the general pediatician or the adult neurologist to master, the discipline has now continued to evolve into so�many subspecialties, such as epilepsy, neuromuscular disease, stroke, malformations, neonatal neurology, metabolic diseases, etc., that the general pediatric neurologist no longer can reasonably possess in-depth expertise in all areas, particularly in dealing with complex cases.
